Just to begin: I know this post is a bad idea. I know that a good 90% of my readers are members of Greek organizations. I also know that I don’t give a shit. While all but one sorority closes down for the summer, Fraternities stay open and active year-round in order to recruit new members. Fraternities do this by opening up vacant rooms to tenants looking for summer housing at low rates. These rates range on average from $300-400 for the whole summer. But it’s not an offer that is available to just anyone; this is an offer reserved exclusively for women. “Any girl who is interested can go through the application process,” said sophomore Brent Kerr, a former rush chair at Zeta Psi fraternity. “You don’t have to be a sorority girl or even a UW student.” “Opening up the rooms really isn’t about making money,” Kerr said. “It helps with recruitment a lot, and it’s also just a lot of fun.” “Living in,” as it is called, has become a cultural staple in the Greek community, and is something that tenants look forward to each year. “One of the main reasons is that it’s a lot cheaper,” said Sara Simmers, a sophomore from Alpha Xi Delta sorority. “I’ve also heard that it’s a lot of fun and that it’s just something that you have to experience during your college years.” Even though Alpha Xi Delta is the only sorority open during the summer, Simmers chose to live in Delta Upsilon fraternity instead. Although the main attraction of the Fraternities is the convenient location and low prices, many girls apply to live in the houses simply to experience a new living situation. “It’s a new opportunity to li ... I know very few NYU students are involved in sororities/Fraternities, but I am wondering if it is worthwhile to join to make friends and sort of make NYU smaller. All the websites say the exact same thing (friendship, philanthropy, blah blah) but is it honestly all about partying? It's hard to get a good perspective on what they're really like.. If anyone could tell me a little bit about the different sororities or just how intensive Greek life is in general, I would greatly appreciate it. ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 18 days ago
Here's what's amazing about “The Scene”: It almost never feels like one. The characters in this funny-sad New York comedy by Theresa Rebeck say and do outrageous things. They beg, lie, grandstand and seduce, sometimes all at once. They suck down enough tequila and vodka to inebriate entire Fraternities, they fornicate athletically enough to require chiropractic care, they apologize with phrases like “my bad – my total bad!” and philosophize thus: “If you lose, like, knowing who you are... then you're lost.” Yeah, whatever. Still, this season-finale production at Actor's Theatre of Charlotte achieves an impressive degree of emotional truth. Director Ann Marie Costa and her fine cast actually make us care about the unlovable, often unbelievable players in Rebeck's tale of an out-of-work actor in a self-destructive tailspin. We feel for Charlie (ATC stalwart Brian Robinson), an artist with just enough integrity to disdain the showbiz grail he so desperately seeks. We want his hard-driving wife Stella (welcome newcomer Allison Lamb) to ditch her soul-killing job in daytime TV and find bliss with an adopted Chinese baby. And we want the couple's lonely friend Lewis (the reliable Dave Blamy) to get laid. As for Clea, the toxic 20-something from Ohio who tempts Charlie to his ruin, we can't help wishing even she might reform, find some measure of herself beyond fabulousness, choose some life-pursuit more honorable than homewrecking. The neighborhood around Georgia State University was for years a maze of boarded up storefronts, aging buildings and parking lots that emptied at the close of each day. But the downtown Atlanta campus is shedding its sleepy commuter school image thanks to plush new dorms, gleaming classroom buildings, Greek life and, yes, even football. Georgia State and other former night schools across the country are transforming into more traditional college campuses to boost enrollment and gain prestige. And each is creating a thriving community that spills over into surrounding neighborhoods, drawing restaurants and retail into once empty streets. "Students say it makes it a 'real university,'" Georgia State President Carl Patton said while sitting in the campus' airy student center. "What they mean is, 'You have sports, you have an honors program, you have Fraternities and sororities, you have freshman housing, you have places to eat on campus and you have a theater to go to.'" The change is putting universities once thought to be only for working adults on the radar of newly minted high school graduates looking for the college experience in a big city. With brand new dorms and long lists of student activities, the campuses are able to draw from a much broader pool of students who come from across the globe. "It gives students a sense of community and belonging," said Claire Van Ummersen, a vice president with the Washington, D.C.-based Ame ... Source: greeklife.case.edu --- 4 days ago

Greek Life at Case has four core values that are the focus for our Community. The Four Pillars of Greek Life are Scholarship, Leadership, Ritual, and Citizenship. To promote scholarship and recognize outstanding members of the incoming freshman class, each summer members of the Greek Community at Case offer scholarships to the incoming class. As your summer ends and you prepare yourself for the beginning of your collegiate career, please take a moment to look over the attached scholarship. That is sponosored by the Interfraternity Congress and Panhellenic Council, governing bodies of the Fraternities and sororities. We all understand the financial burden which college can be, so we highly suggest taking your time and completing the applications. Any scholarship won will certainly help with the cost of books, supplies, and tuition. Applying for or receiving the scholarship does not commit you to joining a Greek organization. How, you may ask, am I going to tie my collegiate Greek experience with recruiting? Well, my friend, with two small words: 'rush party'. I'm involved in planning a recruiting event with one of my teams, and we are discussing the format that has worked well in the recent past. As the other event planners are going over the event, I'm struck by the realization: Oh, my, gosh, it's a RUSH PARTY. Now, for those of you that lacked the Greek experience or scoff at it and considered yourself a 'Gamma Delta Iota' (otherwise known as 'Go- Da*ned Independent') let me tell you that I learned valuable skills as a member of the Greek community, I have made lasting friendships that are still alive today, and I now am giving back to Sigma Kappa by volunteering my time at my local chapter house by helping on resume workshop and career panels for the young women getting ready to graduate and enter the workforce. My alma mater, Miami University, was (and still is) a fairly heavily Greek campus, also being the alpha (or founding) chapter for a number of the Fraternities. When I refer to a rush party, I'm talking about the process whereby new members are recruited for each organization. Each Greek organization has a goal, or number of new members, it is hoping to pledge. The panhellenic council and the leadership team of each organization works on planning the parties. Usually there are a large number of incoming freshman (and sometimes sophomores) lookin ... Source: www.11alive.com --- 60 days ago

Several Fraternities were absent from the event. ... Source: www.wcsh6.com --- 60 days ago
