Mel Brooks 's Young Frankenstein , No. 13 on the American Film Institute 's "100 Funniest Films of All Time," will be out on DVD on Oct. 7. The Broadway version is still running, but it’s pretty hard to top the film for big laughs, outright sass and comic greats -- like Gene Wilder (in the title role), Marty Feldman (as his hunch-backed assistant), Madeline Kahn (as Wilder’s girlfriend/financier), Cloris Leachman (as the castle’s maid), Peter Boyle (as the monster), and of course, the darling, and also naturally funny, Teri Garr (as Wilder’s unsure but willing and sexy assistant). I spoke with Garr, one of Hollywood’s most talented, down-to-earth, and beloved stars, by phone. So how did you get the part in Young Frankenstein? I read that all the agents in town sent their people to the auditions, and that there were more than 500 girls that tried out for the roles. I just went to the audition with all those other girls. I did OK and I got called back. But it was for the Madeline Kahn part, Gene’s financier/girlfriend. But then he (Mel) called me back and he said that he wanted Madeline to do it, but she didn’t want to do it. And I said, “She must be nuts.” Mel said, “Well, come back anyway. Madeline says she’s not going to do it, but she’s going to do it. You can try out for the part of Inga, the assistant. Come in tomorrow, but you have to speak with a German accent.” ...

The reason everyone loves Guillermo del Toro can, I think, be summed up in this new Hobbit related quote. "Believe me, I am jumping up-and-down inside this fat body!" Yes, del Toro teased us all with Hobbit talk when he appeared at the Director's Guild of America recently and spilled all kinds of information regarding Middle Earth and his adaptation of Frankenstein . ComingSoon has the whole delicious thing, but I'll post my favorite bit -- his research into the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien: "I find you have to discipline yourself to write in the morning, and then watch and read in the afternoons stuff that seems relevant, even in a tangential way. For example, reading or watching World War I documentaries or books that I think inform The Hobbit , strangely enough, because I believe it is a book born out of Tolkien's generation's experience with World War I and the disappointment of being in that field and seeing all those values kind of collapse. I think it's a turning point that you need to familiarize yourself with." And naturally, he sounds most excited about tackling Smaug. "Essentially, Smaug represents so many things: greed, pride ... he's 'the Magnificent,' after all. The way his shadow is cast in the narrative you cannot then show it and have it be one thing, he has to be the embodiment of all those things. He's one of the few dragons that will have enormous scenes with lines. He has some of the most beautiful dialogues in tho ...

Guillermo del Toro doesn't ever really need an introduction. If you're even remotely a fan of movies, you know of the guy. And if you're fan of good movies (e.g. Pan's Labyrinth), he's probably on your list of favorite directors. Either way, the creative mastermind behind the Hellboy series is definitely going to engrave his name in the tomes of motion pictures with his upcoming take on the The Hobbit, alongside Peter Jackson. Lord of the Rings certainly set the bar, and despite Hobbit dropping in 2011, I bet we're all anxiously waiting to see what del Toro can do. Thanks to an appearance at the New York Film Festival (via ComingSoon), we have some new insight into the massive two-film production and more. On Preparing for The Hobbit: "I find you have to discipline yourself to write in the morning, and then watch and read in the afternoons stuff that seems ... ...

During a festival from The New Yorker, Guillermo del Toro spoke about The Hobbit and also about Frankenstein , which is one of endless projects he has waiting for him on the other side. Many questions were asked, but because it's so far out, del Toro had to remain silent even though he's very anxious to share. Guillermo is, however, able to discuss how he sees things and what inspires him. With this he explained how he draws inspiration from real life, like for The Hobbit , he looks at things like World War I and draws from that because he believes The Hobbit was born of that generation. He also was also able to discuss some thoughts on Smaug, which is a character many are excited about [...] ...
