This is a guest post by Samantha Catalano, a Public Outreach Coordinator for the Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center. Ms. Catalano coordinates the writing, preparation and distribution of informational materials, including articles related to occupational asbestos exposure, mesothelioma cancer and more. For further information, or to contact Ms. Catalano about informational materials, please email scatalano@maacenter.org. We're all well aware of the need to live "greener" and reduce our environmental impact. In an effort to do so, we all need to consider decreasing our reliance on Fossil Fuel and utilizing alternative sources of energy, such as solar or geothermal. There are approximately 150 operating oil refineries in 32 U.S. states, and the North Sea area of the UK is also home to 9 major onshore refineries and over 300 offshore facilities. All of these refineries are harboring a hidden danger in the form of asbestos that is affecting the heath of refinery workers and nearby residents. Exposure to asbestos has been linked to the eventual development of pleural mesothelioma, a fatal type of cancer. The last U.S. refinery was built in 1976, about four years before the Environmental Protection Agency first instituted asbestos regulations. Until then, asbestos was a popular construction material because it was an extremely efficient insulator. Because of this, oil refinery piping often contained asbestos insulation. However, asbes ...

SALT LAKE CITY - Congress has just lifted a moratorium on oil shale development on federal land, but the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is warning of its consequences. The organization is hosting a presentation tonight featuring Energy Analyst Randy Udall, brother of Colorado Congressman Mark Udall. He says it doesn't matter how high the price of oil gets, or how much we improve extraction technology, oil shale will never be an efficient energy resource. read more ...

The global market for wood pellets as an alternative green energy source for the home and commercial heating market plus power generation currently EXCEEDS SUPPLY. Wood pellets are manufactured from waste wood and standing timber. Wood pellets give a B.T.U.value that is equivalent to traditional Fossil fuels, ie oil, gas, and coal at a MUCH LOWER COST. I, like many others, recently received an Energy Update brochure from Congressman Charlie Dent. While I support the comprehensive scope of the American Energy Act, as outlined in the brochure, and while I am pleased to finally see conservation as part of the plan, I do have concerns about some of the data and conclusions presented. All of the quotes below are from Dent's brochure. ...

Normally, when you think of an energy subsidy, specifically a Fuel subsidy, it’s all good news. With the ever increasing price of Fuel, and the world’s economy going to hell in a handbasket, any help we can get is a good thing. But a new report from the UN Environment Program (UNEP) has turned that idea on its head, and for good measure. Because once you get right down to it, would you rather the government put their moneys in to helping out sustainable and renewable energies, or propping up the old ones? Subsequently, the UNEP has recommended that Fossil Fuel subsidies should be scrapped, and that in doing so could not only decrease the amount of greenhouse gases, but also give a “not insignificant boost to the global economy.” Read more of this story » ...

( Mr Ush photo .) "Skeptics have sometimes dismissed clean energy technologies such as solar and wind power by arguing that these technologies "can't compete on price without public subsidies". However, the history of coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power shows that no energy sector was developed without subsidies." -- Wikipedia Fossil fuels get a lot of government subsidy.  So does renewable energy.  In fact, in 2007 renewable energy received 29% of the $16 billion spent on energy subsidies, while contributing only 7% of our energy needs .  Yet Congress, in its subsidy of renewable energy, virtually guarantees our continued reliance on Fossil fuels.  Why?  Because the tax breaks  need to be extended  from year to year. Imagine if, when you bought a new home, you knew that this year you'd be able to deduct the mortgage interest from your tax bill... but next year and all subsequent years, you might not.  If you don't know how much tax you'll owe, you can't decide whether you can afford to buy your new home!  The same is true in business.  Investors need to be able to project their rate of return.  (Would you invest money with no idea when or if it would earn you a return?)  Yet Congress refuses to put in place a concrete energy policy.  Which pretty much guarantees the status quo (Fossil Fuel addiction) will continue. The production of electricity from wind more than doubled between 2002 and 2006.  The proportion of our energy need ...

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has a major role to play in addressing climate change. While that may surprise some, leading institutional investors have already reached that conclusion. That’s why leading investors managing more than $700 billion in assets sent a letter this week to the SEC asking it to require oil and gas companies to provide better disclosure in their 10-K filings about their potential liabilities associated with climate change. read more ...
