FULTON, N.Y. (AP) _ Standing by stacked 16-foot logs that hours earlier were 100-foot Norway spruce, Foresters tried to explain why cutting down these old trees was an essentially green activity. Slender, bespectacled Paul Trotta framed the counterintuitive crux of the matter this way: "How are you going to regenerate this forest so you have trees on the landscape that keep growing and sequester carbon and hold the world... ...

LANDECK — The Landeck Foresters celebrated 100 years on Sunday with a brunch to help raise funds for scholarships for members’ children. The group was originally chartered as the Landeck Catholic Knights of Ohio, Branch 76, on Oct. 27, 1908, with 15 members. In September 2007, the Catholic Knights of Ohio merged with the Catholic Order of Foresters and there are now 413 adult and 64 juvenile members. The oldest is 94, the youngest is 1. The thrust of the program is to offer insurance benefits to its members. But the organization is much more than that, according to member Dan Wiechart. “It’s about getting together,” Wiechart said. The group’s oldest member, Luke Kill, 94, was in attendance at the breakfast and enjoyed looking over the memorabilia on display. “There’s my father’s name on the charter,” he said proudly as he pointed out Jos. J. Kill on the fragile document. “It was tradition that I joined and I have enjoyed the fellowship very much.” Elmer Pothast, 89, enjoys getting together with his neighbors. “It’s nice to meet and talk about what’s going on and to see the times change,” Pothast said Sunday. The Rev. Roger Bonifas also sees the organization as beneficial. “The member not only get benefits, the group gives back to the community and its an opportunity to socialize,” he said. ...

There are two things that pine forest owners fear: fire and beetles. In the Northern Rockies, an infestation of mountain pine beetles is eating away at whitebark pine . There seems to be a connection to a warming climate that encourages the beetles, which usually live in lower elevations, to move to higher areas that used to have colder conditions. Forestry Service officers worry about what the destruction means to forest fires. Dead trees make fuel for runaway fires. Foresters are urging owners to cut down dead or dying trees. The loss of large numbers of pines might also affect air quality . There is a Web site -- SummittPineBeetle.org -- focused on the infestation. It has put together a litany of stories in the media . ...
