As far as Sandra Ochoa is concerned, happiness is spelled C-A-N-A-D-A, said an article in a special report on MBAs in The Toronto Star on September 11. The 27-year-old Colombian is among the first wave of Foreign Students to benefit from an important change in the federal government's rules for issuing post-graduate work permits. Before the rule change, Ochoa would have been given precisely 90 days to find a job, which would have to be in the field of her degree. Now the law has been changed, allowing Foreign graduates to obtain a permit to remain in Canada for three years without any restrictions on the kind of employment they take. Last year, 63,673 Foreign Students came to Canada, a 4.6-per-cent increase over the previous year, according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. For Ochoa, who came here from Miami in 2006 to take an MBA, the rule change is "absolutely amazing." "Now I have three years, after which I can apply for residency and establish myself more in Canada," she says. "Had that law not been passed, I would not have been given that opportunity." In future, all international graduates who rack up at least one year of work experience in managerial, professional or technical positions during the three-year period will be able to apply to stay permanently in this country through the Canadian Experience Classification. Ochoa graduated with her MBA from the Rotman Business School at the University of Toronto in June – just ... Source: www.startribune.com --- 39 days ago
