I want to focus however, on one point that Ambassador Churkin made. Ambassador Churkin referred to his Minister’s phone conversation with Secretary of State Rice this morning. That conversation raises serious questions about Russian objectives. In that conversation, Foreign Minister Lavrov told U.S. Secretary of State Rice that the democratically elected President of Georgia “must go”. I quote again: “ Saakashvili must go. ” This is completely unacceptable and crosses a line. Filed under: Bush Administration , Iraq , 2008 President As John McCain continues to accuse Barack Obama of wanting to "forfeit" the Iraq War, Reuters reports that the Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari made it clear Sunday that any agreement to keep U.S. troops in Iraq beyond this year would require a "very clear timeline" for their withdrawal. Zebari also told Reuters that a deal that included a timeline is close to being agreed upon and would probably be voted on by the Iraqi parliament in September. The White House prefers that the timeline be called a "a general time horizon". According to the report, Iraq is resisting three U.S. demands. The administration wants U.S. troops to "be immune from Iraqi law", have "the ability to detain Iraqi citizens", and "have authority to conduct military operations". Zebari would not confirm wether or not the timeline resembles the one proposed by Barack Obama and supported by some Iraqi officials, which would have U.S. combat troops out by 2010.
