FP Trading Desk submits: North America is not the only continent where auto companies are feeling pain. UBS Investment Research analyst Fadi Chamoun has slashed his earnings per share and price targets on Canada’s two largest auto suppliers because Automakers in Europe are building fewer vehicles. The analyst cut his fiscal 2009 and 2010 EPS forecast for Magna International Inc. (MGA) by 10% and 4.3% respectively, saying the company will be hit by a 3.4% decline in vehicle production in Western Europe and get hurt by unfavorable Foreign exchange translation. He cut his 2008 EPS forecast for Magna by 1% to C$5.54. Complete Story » ...

Shares of major Asian Automakers took a beating Thursday after they reported dismal September sales figures in the U.S., their most important overseas market. Overall U.S. auto sales plunged last month, dropping below 1 million for the first time in more than 15 years as some consumers struggled to get car loans and others stay away from showrooms amid bank failures and Wall Street turmoil. Sales at every major U.S. and Foreign brand fell at least 24 percent from the previous year, with the exception of General Motors, which said it sold 16 percent fewer vehicles. The news sent Japanese and South Korean auto issues broadly lower Thursday and weighed on broader market sentiment. Shares of Toyota Motor Corp. tumbled 3.4 percent to 4,310 yen after Japan's top automaker posted a 32 percent drop in U.S. sales last month. Although the company's fuel-efficient offerings led to strong sales earlier this year, it too has faltered amid a broad downturn in the U.S. car market. ...

His cut his 2008 EPS forecast for Magna by 1% to $5.54. Magna’s earnings will be down 40% year-over-year in the second half of 2008 "and we expect restructuring related write-downs to increase over the next twelve months as the company continues to right-size its North American manufacturinig footprint," Mr. Chamoun said. He rates Magna a “buy” with a new 12 month target of $65, down from $73 previously. Lower vehicle volumes in Western Europe will also hurt Guelph, Ont.-based Linamar Corp. , Mr. Chamoun said, as will a decline in demand for its aerial work platforms. He cut his fiscal 2008, 2009 and 2010 EPS estimates for Linamar by 2.2%, 11.2% and 8.5% respectively. He rates Linamar “neutral” with a new 12-month target of $11.50, down from $13.50.
