Sales of the Ford Ranger pickup, the only automobile made in Minnesota, fell 2.6 percent in September, but fared better than other trucks made by the company. Ford reported it sold 3,915 Ranger trucks this September, compared to 4019 during the same period in September 2007. Sales of the company’s other trucks slid much further, however. Sales of its F-Series fell 41.6 percent , while Sales of its Low Cab Forward line fell 61.5 percent for the month. Through the first nine months of the year, 54,815 Rangers were sold, compared to 57,434 a year ago, a drop of 4.6 percent. The Ford Motor Co., (NYSE: F) based in Dearborn, Mich. reported its U.S. Sales dropped 34.6 percent overall for September. It said car Sales fell 19.4 percent from a year earlier, while truck Sales fell 39.4 percent. In 2006 Ford announced it would close the assembly plant in St. Paul’s Highland Park where the Ranger is made, but it has extended the 2008 closing date several times. It plans to keep the plant open until at least 2011, due in part to a pick-up in demand for the Ranger, which is selling better than other, less fuel-efficient models of trucks and SUVs. (F) ...
