Talk about the difference in competition between the Southeastern Conference and the Mid-American Conference. There’s not much of a difference than the competition other than the competition you play. The speed of the game is a little faster and you have larger guys like the linebackers are a little bigger. Have you talked to anyone at Vanderbilt about their undefeated start this year? I talk to some of them there every weekend after a game and congratulate them because they are doing a lot of big things now. All of my friends are playing except for one. It’s nice to see them finally doing well just knowing most of the players on the team now. As a receiver how familiar are you with the offense and the routes? I’m pretty familiar because I came here in the summer and we did some seven-on-seven with the basic plays. In camp we ran the basic plays and put a little twist to them. I pretty much know all the offense. Every so often they will throw in a twist that I haven’t seen yet, but other than that I have seen the offense. Talk about your first touchdown catch at Ohio last weekend against Virginia Military Institute. It was great. Finally. I’ve been waiting so long for my first touchdown, and now it happens. I know it was against VMI but it was good to get that one and now hopefully there is more to come. As a receiving group you have had success as a unit this year. Why has this been the case? They’ve been throwing the ball and w ...

A lawyer for Medford High Football Coach James Atkins told the Medford Transcript today that his client maintains his innocence and is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to defend himself. This comes after a Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments charging the Chelsea Police Department sergeant and former head Coach of the Chelsea High School Football team with misappropriating funds from the team’s booster club for personal expenditures, Oct. 1. “It is unfortunate that after this period of time the District Attorney’s office has brought these charges,” Atkins lawyer Doug Louison said. “But at the same time, Segt. Atkins is relieved to finally be able to respond and defend them. And he looks forward to coming out swinging in order to answer them.” District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced late Wednesday that Atkins, 43, of Revere, was formally charged with five counts of larceny for allegedly withdrawing approximately $10,000 from the Chelsea Football Boosters Club to use for expenses that were unrelated to team activities from 2004-07. An extensive joint investigation by the Chelsea Police Department and Massachusetts State Police together with Suffolk County prosecutors revealed that Atkins used the team’s funds for personal travel and entertainment purposes. The Transcript reached Atkins by phone Wednesday night, while he was conducting Football practice. Atkins said he would comment on the allegations later this wee ...

A Suffolk County Grand Jury Wednesday returned indictments charging current Medford High Football Coach and Chelsea Police sergeant James Atkins, with misappropriating funds from the Chelsea High School Football team's booster club for personal expenditures, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced, Oct. 1. Atkins, 43, of Revere, was formally charged with five counts of larceny for allegedly withdrawing approximately $10,000 from the Chelsea Football Boosters Club to use for expenses that were unrelated to team activities from 2004-07. An extensive joint investigation by the Chelsea Police Department and Massachusetts State Police together with Suffolk County prosecutors revealed that Atkins used the team’s funds for personal travel and entertainment purposes. In 2007, the Chelsea Police Department began an internal investigation into Atkins’ misappropriation of funds from the booster club, after parents and school officials notified authorities that they were concerned about the Coach’s handling of monies raised during fundraising events. Based upon their findings, the department referred the matter to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and State Police assigned to the district attorney’s office. “The charges against James Atkins are serious and troubling,” Conley said. “Atkins abused the public trust in his role as a police officer, he violated the trust of the kids who looked up to him as a mentor and a Coach, a ...
