Following the 2009 Terps’ Football season, I was critical of Debbie Yow’s decision to bring back head coach Ralph Friedgen. http://charmcitysportstalk.com/2009/12/01/friedgen-to-return-for-10th-season-thoughts/ I was in favor of bringing in a guy like Phil Fulmer, Brian Billick, or Tommy Tuberville in to replace Friedgen. Many people argued that the university did not have the monetary resources that would allow them pay 3 coaches (Friedgen, Franklin, and the new coach) My argument was that the money that MD would lose by paying Friedgen and Franklin, would be gained down the road. I argued that a new coach, particularly one with the name brand that those 3 coaches possess, would bring excitement, and ultimately, a winner. That excitement and winning would ultimately lead to increased ticket sales, national TV games, new Byrd Stadium suite sales, merchandise sales, etc. I argued that because of this, the money that the athletic department would lose in the present would be more than made up in the future. For those interested, here is a brief explanation I received in an e-mail from AD Debbie Yow, regarding my hypothetical situations of paying 3 coaches, and taking a short-term loss in order to secure a potential long-term gain. I can tell you that each collegiate athletics program operates within the structure of its respective University. In our case, there is next to no liklihood of approval to borrow money, like a business could ...

Gary Boulanger is Board President of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. (Photos © J. Maus) One of today’s many excellent breakout sessions focused on youth cycling programs. When I popped my head in I saw a familiar face at the lectern. It was Gary Boulanger, former bike industry journalist, PR guy, and entrepreneur behind the now defunct bike brand Cycles Gaansari (and the eponymously named bike shop in Dayton, Ohio). Boulanger is now the recently elected Board President of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). NICA is a new organization (they held their first board meeting just last month) working toward the ambitious goal of developing competitive high school mountain biking leagues from coast-to-coast by 2020. So far there are just three states with leagues — California (NorCal and SoCal), Colorado, and Washington. But, with an impressive list of big-time corporate sponsors (Specialized, SRAM, Trek among others) and partners, the future looks very bright. Freshman girls compete in a recent race in the NorCal League. During today’s session, Boulanger highlighted a program in Marin County, California. At Sir Francis Drake High School, the 60-student bike team is larger than the Football team. Last Sunday, he added, nearly 500 students competed at a national competition. Last year, the SoCal League (from Southern California) boasted 16 teams. Boulanger said that league will have 20 teams this year ...

Brett Favre Football Jerseys cheap jerseys The National Football League is one of the best shows in the United States. Although some sports have a lot of fans, nothing comes close to what Football has. So what makes Football different from most sports? One very good thing about Football is that the enjoyment is found not just in watching the games but also in watching it with someone close to you. Be it with your family, your co-workers, friends or neighbors. League officials from the NFL have announced that Brett Favre Football jerseys are now the all-time best selling jerseys in the history of the game. More #4 Brett Favre Football jerseys have been sold than any other jersey for any player, including NFL greats such as Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, or Johnny Unitas. What makes this record even more amazing is that Favre managed to break this record while playing in the NFL’s smallest market. It could be said that Football jersey sales are the greatest measure of fan popularity, because fans vote for their favorites with their wallets. In any case, this record is certainly evident of the fact that Brett Favre’s appeal is wide-spread among the NFL fan base. He couldn’t have set the all-time jersey sales record by only selling jerseys in Green Bay. It just isn’t big enough, even with multiple jerseys being purchased by the same person. That’s right – many fans own several Brett Favre Football jerseys, as there are many to pic ...

We need to play Clemson more…some of those names, Igwebuike in particular, raised my blood pressure just a tad. DavetheDawg As an emphatic advocate for reviving the rivalry , I could not agree more wholeheartedly with the above sentiment. I was, therefore, most pleased when Georgia and Clemson announced in 2005 that the Bulldogs and the Tigers would tangle with one another in 2013 and 2014, with the former game being played in Death Valley and the latter contest taking place in Sanford Stadium. At the time, the exact dates of the games had not yet been determined , but it seemed logical for the two teams to face off in the season opener for both squads. That, though, is not to be, as David Hale confirms . The Red and Black will host the Mean Green of North Texas on August 31, 2013, and Appalachian State will come calling in the Classic City at a later date that same autumn. Presently, there are four available Saturdays on the Bulldogs’ 2013 slate : September 7, between home dates against North Texas and South Carolina; September 21, between home dates against South Carolina and Alabama; October 5, between a home date against Alabama and a road game at Tennessee; and November 9, between a neutral site date against Florida and a home game against Auburn. Three of those dates make no sense. Shoehorning a road game against Clemson between Alabama and Tennessee or between Florida and Auburn would be suicidal, and opening the season with ...

Best NFL Jerseys For Football Fans mlb jerseys Every team in the NFL has played at least 4 games, which makes this the unofficial end to the first quarter of the Football season. Now’s the best time to get your hands on a new jersey to support your favorite team or player. Sure, it’s cool to be the first one on your block with a jersey from a rookie drafted in April, but what do you think all those Chargers fans are doing with old Ryan Leaf jerseys? Instead of taking a chance on a rookie, use the facts from the first quarter of the season to help sway your decision. This is considered to be able to cheer their favorite team and pump up the spirits of the team members. Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was charged with one count of burglary stemming from a January incident and which items were taken from a fraternity house. Eugene police said, during their investigation, that Masoli was not suspected in the case but the Lane County District Attorney said that Masoli and teammate Garrett Embry were charged on Wednesday. Embry was kicked off the team last month for violating team rules. Oregon officials said it didn’t have anything to do with the burglary investigation. Masoli and Embry are scheduled to be arraigned on Friday. Masoli threw for 2,147 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He did not play in the Ducks’ victory over the Bruins.
