The next chapter in the Balducci's saga takes place overseas. The gourmet grocer that built a following for its 10 stores along the East Coast plans to open its first international location in Dubai at the end of next month. The store is being built in partnership with developer Nakheel Retail in the Mall of Dubai, and the company hopes it will be the first of several locations in the bustling, wealthy region. Gee, Penn Quarter -- where Balducci's had an on-again / off-again relationship with a site -- just doesn't have the same ring to it. Looks like residents will need a passport to get their Bilinski all-natural chicken sausages. Still, Balducci's name is woven into the fabric of Washington, not least because local businessman Mark Ordan , with financial backing from Bear Stearns Merchant Bank, took over Balducci's in 2003. (Yes, he's the same guy who founded Fresh Fields then sold it to Whole Foods .) Ordan left Balducci's in 2006 to become chief operating officer of The Mills Corp ., a shopping mall developer in Chevy Chase. Last month, he was named CEO of McLean-based Sunrise Senior Living . ...

The economic slowdown is wilting demand for arugula. Whole Foods ( WFMI ) tumbled in late trading Tuesday after the organic grocer posted weaker-than-expected fiscal third-quarter results , guided lower for the fourth quarter, pulled back on store openings and suspended its dividend. “Our business model has been highly successful, and we remain very bullish on our growth prospects as the market for natural and organic products continues to grow and as our company continues to evolve,” said CEO John Mackey. “However, the challenging economic environment appears to be negatively impacting our sales.” That’s something of an understatement. The company, which earlier this year guided to comparable sales growth in the high-single digits , said same-store sales rose just 2.6% in the latest quarter. That’s not all: Whole Foods now expects comparable store sales growth of 1% to 5% for 2009, and a profit next year of $1.21 to $1.27 a share, excluding certain costs. Analysts were looking for $1.52 a share. In spite of all the cutbacks - Whole Foods cut its 2008 store-opening plan to 15 from as many as 21 three months ago, and said it would halve capital spending not related to new store openings - the board doubled Whole Foods’ authorization to buy back its shares, to $200 million. After rising 7% in Tuesday’s marketwide rally, shares of Whole Foods tumbled 10% in postclose trading to $20.52, putting them within a dollar of their 52-week low ...
