One of my projects this fall and winter is to plant fruit trees in my yard. I'd like to have apple, apricot, cherry, fig, and plum trees. I've be been thinking about planting fruit trees for years. I've even thought about starting an organization to help people plant fruit trees in their yards as one way to encourage eating local produce. When I was on vacation in Florida recently, I read an article in The Miami Herald about a group called Miami-Dade Adopt-A-Tree. County residents who own a single-family home or duplex are able to receive two free trees a year -- two of them fruit trees. ...

A major study exploring how science can enhance global Food-crop production has been launched by the Royal Society (1), the UK's national academy of science, recently. In the light of growing concerns about the long-term sufficiency and sustainability of the world's Food supplies, the Society has assembled a working group of expert scientists and economists, drawn from the UK's leading research institutes. ...

In this day and age we try and consider all of the certifications and seals on the packages of the Food we buy. Is it organic? Fair Trade? Wild harvested? Rainforest friendly? Local? What does this all mean anyway? Who is actually growing my Food and who is profiting when I buy it? Most people do not want to contribute to destroying our planet’s ecosystems, nor do people want to support child slave labor in the Ivory Coast when eating their favorite chocolate bar. Yet, somehow, these atrocities are taking place with many, many of the products we consume everyday. Now the question is... Is it possible for our Food to be both affordable and not destroy the planet? ... ...

Modelling Biofuel Production as an Infectious Growth on Food Production Biofuel capacity or production as a fraction of Food Supply for three different cases, along with sigmoidal (ie logistic) projections, 1998-2018. Plum curves show US corn ethanol processing capacity in service or under construction as a fraction of ethanol potential of entire US corn crop. Brown curve shows actual production of US ethanol as a fraction of ethanol potential of US corn crop. Violet curve shows global biofuel production as a fraction of estimate of biofuel potential of entire global human Food Supply. Sigmoidal curves all have K = 1/3 (infection doubling time of three years), and cross the 50% line at 2008, 2010.8 and 2014.2 respectively. Sigmoids are scenarios, not forecasts . Actual biofuel production growth will depend heavily on oil prices and policy responses to increasing Food prices. See text for sources and methods. ( Ed note: Stuart has been an important part of this team, but no, he is not "back." It has just been more than six months since he wrote this article, and it seemed like it might be a good time to revisit it. ) [break] Many people are aware that Food-based biofuel production has had an influence on Food prices. Many people also know that US ethanol production is growing rapidly and now using a noticeable fraction of the total corn Supply. However, I'm going to argue that the situation in the near term is potentially more serious t ...

CONGERVILLE -- Everyone who drives a car knows America's dependence on foreign oil is a bad idea. An even worse idea, Terra Brockman suggests, is dependence on foreign Food and massive commercial agriculture ... a confluence that has put Americans at risk. Brockman, founder of The Land Connection, and Sandra Steingraber, scientist, author and environmentalist, spoke recently about the link between the health of our bodies and the integrity of the land, air and water. Steingraber's early research into cancer, which led to her book "Living Downstream: A Scientist's Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment," evolved after learning about cancer clusters in central Illinois while growing up in Pekin. She now lives in Trumansburg, N.Y., with her husband and two children. She was in the Peoria area recently for the filming of the documentary "Living Downstream," being produced by Chanda Chevannes of The People's Picture Co. A trailer for the film is at www.theppcinc.com/projects/livingdownstream/index.html. In an audience of about 75 people who came to hear Brockman and Steingraber speak were teachers, farmers and environmentalists who filled the Village Hall in Congerville, a tiny central Illinois community defined by a massive grain elevator and bordered by endless fields of chemically treated corn and soybeans stretching to the horizons. In a world increasingly concerned with security and risk, Steingraber redefines our g ...
