Abstract   Daphnia lumholtzi has been very successful in colonizing North America since its appearance in Texas in 1990. Although previous studies have sought to link its success as an invasive species with various aspects of its population biology, there is little experimental data linking the invasion success of D. lumholtzi with its autecology, specifically its reproduction strategy. In this study we sought to link Food quality and quantity to diapause in D. lumholtzi through a variation in phosphorus (P) content of algae, Food quantity, and light level. We also assessed the effect of Daphnia peak population densities on reproductive rates and Production of resting eggs. We found that when Food is abundant, per capita ephippia Production may be limited by P, but under Food limitation conditions, there is no significant effect of Food quality on ephippia Production. Our results suggest that a combination of Food quality/quantity and population density may work together to induce the Production of resting eggs in this invasive species. Abstract   The Mattaponi River is part of the York River estuary in Chesapeake Bay. Our objective was to identify the organic matter (OM) sources fueling the lower Food web in the tidal freshwater and oligohaline portions of the Mattaponi using the stable isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Over 3 years (2002–2004), we measured zooplankton densities and C and N stable isotope ratios during the spring zooplankton bloom. The river was characterized by a May–June zooplankton bloom numerically dominated by the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis and cladocera Bosmina freyi . Cluster analysis of the stable isotope data identified four distinct signatures within the lower Food web: freshwater riverine, brackish water, benthic, and terrestrial. The stable isotope signatures of pelagic zooplankton, including E. affinis and B. freyi , were consistent with reliance on a mix of autochthonous and allochthonous OM, including OM derived from vascular plants and humic-rich sediments, whereas macroinvertebrates consistently utilized allochthonous OM. Based on a dual-isotope mixing model, reliance on autochthonous OM by pelagic zooplankton ranged from 20% to 95% of Production, declining exponentially with increasing river discharge. The results imply that discharge plays an important role in regulating the energy sources utilized by pelagic zooplankton in the upper estuary. We hypothesize that this is so because during high discharge, particulate ...

Expectations for greater biofuel plant capacity and the federal Renewable Fuels Standard have created a "can't lose" demand proposition for U.S. corn and soybean farmers. This is according to the testimony of Bruce A. Babcock at a field hearing of the Senate Agriculture Committee on Food, feed and fuel Production at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, on August 18. Babcock, a professor of economics and director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State University, told the committee that ethanol mandates have created a demand of between 25 and 30 percent of the U.S. corn crop for fuel Production.Babcock said he expects a bright outlook for corn and soybean prices over the next five years, facilitated by tax credits and energy mandates, and as long as crude oil prices remain above $100 per barrel. There is little doubt, said Babcock, that biofuels from corn and vegetable oil will meet levels mandated by Congress. A copy of Babcock's full statement at the August 18 hearing is available at http://www.card.iastate.edu/presentations. ...

(This series of posts looks in detail at some of the fascinating aspects of Food Production identified by Michael Pollan in his book The Omnivore's Dilemma (2006). All page numbers refer to that book, unless otherwise noted. Other related posts can be found here .) The series of posts on the ethics of Food was triggered by a remarkable book that I recently read that caused me to re-think the whole question of my relationship to the Food that I eat. Food was not something that I had thought much of before. I am not a gourmet by any means, and Food for me is an incidental item in my life, not one that looms large. But Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma (2006) has made me see Food in a whole new light and raised some interesting new issues that I had not considered deeply before. It made me realize that what I choose to buy and eat is, whether I like it or not, a deeply political act and that I should pay more attention to it. The book gives a fascinating account of the role of Food with all its full political, economic, and moral complexity. The next series of posts will examine some of these issues. Pollan examines four different Food supply systems. The first is what he calls the industrial Food chain , which is the source of most of the Food that is available in the developed world. This Food is produced by large factory farms and distributed nationwide (and even worldwide) and is based on an assembly-line model. It seeks t ...
