Each year we receive a breakdown of students by grade level who have health issues we need to be aware of. Just out of curiosity, I recorded how many students had asthma and/or severe Food Allergies. Get this...we have approximately 450 students in my school (k-5) and *54* are listed as having asthma. We also have 19 known severe Food Allergies, and of those *9* are nut Allergies. Isn't that a bit disturbing? My brother grew up with a severe nut allergy and he was like the only person we knew who was allergic to nuts. And we didn't know any kids who had asthma. Has anyone researched this at all? Any ideas as to why these kinds of big numbers? I'm really just curious and don't know much about it, since neither boy has these issues. ...

For parents of Food-allergic children, fall can be a scary time of year. The Food Allergy Group of the North Shore is holding a parent roundtable discussion on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m. at Salem Hospital, where parents will have the opportunity to share ideas and finalize plans for a safe holiday. The meeting is free and open to the public. “This is a great time to connect with other parents who really understand the special challenges Halloween presents for children with Food Allergies,” said Sharon Schumack, director of education for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, which is sponsoring the meeting. The program will be held in Salem Hospital’s Davenport Conference Area, Room 103. Pre-registration is not required. Thos Robinson/Getty Food Allergies are serious business and is why actor Frank Dicopoulos took part in the FAAN (Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) Walk for Food Allergy in Long Branch, NJ on Sunday, August 7th. The Guiding Light star is no stranger to the network, as he found out that he was allergic to the iodine content of shellfish when his "throat closed up" -- while on his first date with wife Teja Anderson ! However, what scares him most is learning that their daughter Olivia , 11, is allergic to shrimp. When exposed to it, Olivia "had trouble breathing," an experience which the actor calls "scary." It's one reason that the 51-year-old decided to emcee the FAAN event. "It's bringing awareness to the community that for kids and adults who have Food Allergies, it's a serious problem." Frank and Teja are also parents to son Jaden , 14, who is allergic to grasses. Source: APP Does your child suffer from a Food allergy? If so, how did you find out? ...

When your child doesn't have a Food allergy, the most that you have to deal with is a picky eater. But when coming near peanuts or dairy can cause serious health issues, then you have to be on your toes at all times. So an event on Saturday is just what kids with Food Allergies and their parents need. They will be able to let their guards down when Amazinflates hosts a fundraiser for the nonprofit Kids With Food Allergies at Sports + Field in Wesley Chapel. The Times story, by Helen Anne Travis, says that Amazinflates' nine inflatable fun houses and obstacle courses will be sanitized so kids with Food Allergies can jump and slide without fear of encountering an allergy-triggering particle. Only snow cones and cotton candy will be served — no milk, soy or nuts will be allowed. And isn't it worth it for a few carefee hours for the kids to just be kids? Cost is $10 but adults are free. Find it at Sports + Field, 2029 Arrowgrass Drive, Wesley Chapel. -- Sherry Robinson [Photo: Times files] ...
