Have you ever tried paying attention to how your professors look like over the years? They all started out as young students with beautiful black/blonde/brown hairs. As they went through winters after winters of research debacles, their hairs slowly turned grey. And eventually, one by one, their hairs fell off from their heads to give rise to the baldness that signified their tenures. Well, if you are interested in that color-changing-plus-structure-falling phenomenon in your professors' heads, then you might not want to miss our great HKSS/HKSBS Foliage Trip next week--where you can actually observe this very same phenomenon happening in our mother nature. IMPORTANT: Please RSVP to wingho@mit.edu before Thursday (Oct 9) noon. ...

Now that Myrtle Beach's planned boardwalk has the Community Appearance Board's approval, discussions are turning green - meaning landscaping and money. At today's Downtown Redevelopment Corp. meeting, Executive Director David Sebok will update his group on the appearance board's conditional OK. On Oct. 21 he will talk to the Myrtle Beach City Council about funding the project. The appearance board last week gave boardwalk plans a thumbs up but reserved the right to further examine the Downtown Redevelopment Corp.'s plans for landscaping the milelong shorefront walkway, because board members said they hadn't spent sufficient time discussing that aspect of the plans. ...

Southeastern New England should show its full color the last week of October, predicts Paul Tribuna, manager of Bartlett Tree Experts in Hanover. “I’m looking at maples right now. Their tops are bright red; they are beautiful,” Tribuna said last week, noting treetops along Cohasset streets. But those fiery maples are what Tribuna calls “stressed” trees. South Shore Foliage enthusiasts will notice that trees in lowlands with lots of rain or in areas with distressed root systems will turn faster than surrounding woodlands, he said. Each year’s Foliage forecast depends on a number of factors. Cold weather and reduced daylight both trigger color changes, but the first trees to turn are those exposed to excessive moisture or insect disease. This year’s excessive rains have caused many leaf disease issues, Tribuna said, which has hit the area’s Norway maples and fruit tree varieties. Generally, however, the rain’s been a bonus. “Last year was a very dry year, and the fall color was very off,” he said. “This year, the amount of moisture will definitely enhance colors as the trees start to change.” CHEMISTRY OF COLOR : Scientifically speaking, changing leaves are more than a fall spectacular    Why do leaves change color? Blame it on lack of sunlight, not the first frost. Leaves change color because the shorter fall days don’t  provide enough sunlight for photosynthesis (the process plants use to make food). Trees stop making chlorophyll ...
