Gov. David Paterson today announced his endorsement of Democratic Senate candidate Brian Foley, who is trying to unseat GOP Sen. Casear Trunzo in the 3rd SD on Long Island. "I am proud to be supporting Brian X. Foley for Senate because he shares my values for New York State's future," Paterson said in a press release. "In these uncertain times, we need Brian's strong leadership to confront issues like rising property taxes, out of control energy costs, and spiking healthcare premiums." "I look forward to working with him to bring the same integrity and common sense approach to Albany that he used to turn around Brookhaven and deliver millions of dollars in tax relief to its residents." No big surprise here, since this is a top-priority race for the Senate Democrats and Paterson has been stepping up his involvement on behalf of the minority he used to lead as they try to drum the GOP out of office - much to the chagrin of the majority. Foley is the third Democrat challenging an incumbent Republican senator to receive Paterson's endorsement. All of these announcements have been made at arm's length - via press release and not in person - which gives the governor a bit of cover with the GOP. Democrat Brian Foley really (ahem) takes the bull by the horns with this latest TV ad - his second of the campaign - which takes direct aim on his Republican target, Sen. Caesar Trunzo, inferring that his "don't fix what's not broken" argument is, well, bull. Unlike Trunzo's first ad, which featured not a single image of the Long Island senator (perhaps this has something to do with the fact that he's 82?), Foley's ad includes a black-and-white shot of Trunzo that appears to be a number of years old. It does not, however, include any footage of Foley himself. But he took care of that with his first ad , which cast him as "the future" and the 36-year Senate veteran Trunzo as "the past." Last week's Siena poll showed Foley trailing Trunzo, who is running something of a Rose Garden campaign by keeping a very low profile, by just six percentage points.
