I am traveling this week and hence my posts will be short and sweet. Palm finally announced that they will no longer be shipping the foolio Foleo. The hideous looking device, which was supposed to be a PDA companion was announced at the D5 conference earlier this year. This announcement never quite made sense to me as […] ...

Filed under: Laptops We got a nice helping of slides dropped on our virtual doorstep this evening, fleshing out Dell's upcoming netbook -- which they seem to be calling the "Dell E." Um, Eeenteresting name choice, but that doesn't seem set in stone, and there's plenty else going on here to ponder over. Dell's breaking the Dell E into two device types, a 8.9-inch model clearly meant to take on the Eee 900, and the 12.1-inch "E Slim" which actually looks positioned to take on the MacBook Air and X300, at a mere 0.8-inches thick, though perhaps in a lower-end capacity. Even the 8.9-inch model will have some distinctions, with E Classic model for super low-end use, and E Video and E Video+ for more RAM, larger flash storage, webcams and Bluetooth in the + model. Rollout looks to be slated for August for the E, August / September-ish for the E Slim, and a followup for both of those in October of WWAN, with WiMAX after that. Dell even has a second version of both devices slated for Q2 2009, but that's all we know about those so far. Perhaps most interesting is that all of these run Linux and Windows XP, and while it's not clear if there's a full-featured Linux OS onboard, there does seem to be an instant-on, Foleo -esque Linux included on all of them called BlackTop. We're not sure if there's any relation to Splashtop , but the janky-ass interface and email / calendar / contacts apps seem to be telling us no. BlackTop will support WWAN ...

There's a chance Palm will revive its "mobile companion" Foleo. Apparently, Palm has recently invited beta testers which are at the same time existing smartphone owners to test an "innovative new product." I [...] ...

The fortunes of famed PDA maker Palm have been lagging lately, what with the general decline of the PDA market and the industry's rather dumbfounded response to the propose (and quickly terminated) Foleo PDA compantion notebook. One bright spot in Palm's universe has been its low-cost Palm Centro smartphone, listing for $99 and giving mobile users a taste of the touchscreen-enabled smartphone lifestyle without the sting of a typical smartphone price. http://apcmag.com/palm_readies_next...n_web_20_os.htm "Palm boss Ed Colligan reveals the ‘Palm 2.0’ OS platform to APC, including a possible return for the Foleo sub-notebook, and why Palm doesn't just give up and go home... So let’s talk about the future - and specifically the forthcoming all-new Palm OS, which is codenamed Nova and said to be built around Linux. Colligan calls it "Palm OS" and later "Palm 2.0", both times his fingers drawing quotation marks in the air as he speaks. Palm 2.0, as in Web 2.0, although he makes it clear that "I'm not coming up with the branding right now - whether it’s Palm OS 2.0 or Next Generation, we’re not coming up with the branding right now. But this is something different to this" he says, pointing to the Centro." In this interview with Ed Colligan, he reveals that the "classic" PalmOS many are familiar with isn't going anywhere. Palm has a perpetual license from ACCESS and they will continue to use it for the Centro line aimed at consumers. They aren't ceasing Windows Mobile devices either, which will be the main platform for the Treo aimed at the enterprise with Exchange servers. The new line, which has been called Nova or Palm 2.0, will be for a new line of prosumer devices slotted between the Centro and Treo lines. Do you think there is room for such a line? This goes against what Microsoft is doing, helping their partners come up with devices aimed at consumers, prosumers or the enterpr ...

Hey, guys, can I vent for a minute?.........and if I do, would one of you be kind enough to pull me down off of the ceiling? I just read an article from cNet, regarding the "Nova" OS, due to be released later this year. Presumeably, it is supposed to redeem Palm from its 30-plus million-dollar loss over the Foleo, and "bring Palm back to the things which made it great to begin with". In it, the article lightly hinted that, while the Palm OS is in dire need of an updated version, the WM platform is also being seen as an eventual dead-end. What bothers me is this: what little was disclosed about Nova suggested that it would, in part, take Apple's lead regarding the use of web-based apps, and a more closed-to-independant-3rd-party-apps approach. Correct me, here.......isn't what made Palm OS great its open platform for which eleventy-trillion 3rd-party apps have been written? Isn't it true that WM gives one huge freedom to tailor their device according to its use? If what I inferred is correct, then Palm will eventually stop producing devices which accept 3rd-party apps, go exclusively with web-based apps, and offer the excuse that these devices will offer far better web integration than any previous lines. What will happen to my Resco Explorer, Planetarium, Office Suite, etc.? (P.S. --- also...........privacy issues?) ...

When Palm sent out invitations for users to trial an “innovative new product” earlier on this week, the criteria that participants must be heavy smartphone and email users, have a WiFi router and an account with Sprint led many to presume that it referred to the Treo 800w .  That handset - long in the making, and believed to be hitting Sprint in July - is expected to have the usual full thumbboard as well as WiFi, EV-DO Rev.A and Windows Mobile 6, and it seems reasonable that Palm would be beta testing it around now.  However, just as we were all about to file the rumor away, another possibility was suggested: could Palm be reviving the Foleo? Intended as a companion device for Palm smartphones, the Foleo project was cancelled in September last year after serious and ongoing doubts that there was a market for a web and messaging-centric ultraportable.  Critics pointed at its inability to run mainstream apps and its relatively high price ($599), and Palm decided to take their money and invest it in their next-gen mobile OS instead.  Subsequently, ASUS have swept the board with their Eee PC - a low-power device ideal for web browsing and messaging - and kick-started a new niche of small, budget notebooks usually running cut-down OSes.  Was the Foleo, ironically, ahead of its time?  Looking at the price, it’s hard to see how it would fit - in its state when Palm canned the project, reliant on a connected smar ...

The Register seems to think that the Palm Foleo might resurface, only this time, it could include integrated WiMAX connectivity. Their guess stems from a beta invite that Palm recently sent out to test an "innovative new product". Palm Infocenter has the full wording of the invite but these qualifications do support the Reg's thoughts; the first three are required while the last four are optional: Sprint Subscriber Bluetooth headphones or car kits WiFi Router access Existing Smartphone Users Heavy to Medium e-mail users Heavy phone users Travel for work with their phone My first thought was that the device is the rumored Palm 800w along with support for the Sprint Airave femtocell device for seamless cell to VoIP calls. Now, I'm not so sure because the optional qualifications point towards a device that offers heavy e-mail support. If this is the Foleo II, there's hope for the device given all the inexpensive, sub-notebooks that are popping up. My advice to Palm if it is: keep the price under $400 for a portable computing device; under $300 if it's just a companion device like the original Foleo was meant to be. Thanks for the tip, Dave ! ...

Section: Communications , Cellphones , Cellular Providers , Smartphones , Mobile , Computers , Wireless Palm has recently begun looking for users to test an “innovative new product”. The lucky recipients of the email invitation must be a “heavy” smartphone and email user as well as use a Wi-Fi router and they also need to be a Sprint customer. While this sounds like, and most people would think that this was for the rumored Wi-Fi equipped Treo 800 , The Register has a unique thought and its one that I am not sure how much I can believe. They are calling for the re-birth of the never launched Palm Foleo , and as a comeback it will be WiMAX enabled. While it almost sounds logical, I think they are off from the simple statement of “innovative new product,” as the Foleo was never really that innovative. Not to mention, although it never officially launched I am not sure it could be considered new at this point, unless of course (as Kevin from jkOnTheRun points out) that Palm launches the device as the Foleo II, then technically it would be new. Still I think this is clearly just a rumor, and one that will never come to see the light of day. Of course for this rumor to even have a chance, we would have to see Sprint actually get their WiMAX service up and running. Looks like Palm really was ahead of the curve with the Foleo -- since then we've seen a raft of laptop-esque devices. Call them Mobile Internet Devices (“MIDS”) or (as Engadget recommends and we agree) Netbooks, it a neat idea that's coming on strong. The EEE PC, Dell's upcoming little monster, the Shift, the RedFly, the list goes on.. The latest rumor is that HTC intends to get in on this action in a big way: market sources in Taiwan indicated that HTC is developing new MID (Mobile Internet Device) products, using Intel's Atom and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset platforms. New devices are likely to be unveiled in the second half of 2008. - This rumor fits in very nicely with something Qualcomm let drop not too long ago, that they're excited to develop NetBook-style-devices with Windows Mobile 7 as the OS . It's a good idea. The thing that struck me most during my RedFly Review was that although the Windows Mobile interface is plagued by too many “Desktop Metaphors,” that very weakness becomes a big big strength when you put it on a laptop-like device. It's like Windows Mobile was made for Netbooks. [via MoDaCo ] ...
