Congress balked at bailing out Wall Street today, but Democrats from South Florida held their noses and voted for a financial rescue package. They felt compelled to prop up financial institutions to protect pensioners, homeowners and investors whose savings and investments are potentially at stake. “As we speak, the markets are spiraling out of control, Florida’s pension system may be in jeopardy, seniors in our state have watched their retirement savings lose value every minute, and foreclosure rates are going through the roof,’’ said Congressman Alcee Hastings. Congress says "No'' and markets plummet He and others said warnings about dire financial consequences should be taken seriously. The word is that Congress will come back to the issue on Thursday, after a Jewish holiday, and attempt to find a bill that draws a majority of votes. “Although this plan did not pass today, it was clear to me that inaction was unacceptable,’’ said Congressman Ron Klein. ``We can see already the negative effects on the markets.’’ Fellow Congressman Kendrick Meek worried about senior citizens. ``Floridians living on fixed incomes who are dependent upon pension and retirement income need this financial rescue package to pass,’’ he said. ``If Congress doesn’t act, this nightmarish scenario could repeat itself over and over again throughout Florida and the nation.’’ South Floridians are especially sensitive to the financial turmoil because of its depress ...

As the 2008 presidential campaign enters its final two months, there are several "elephants in the room," big issues being ignored. One is race; the fact some Americans won't vote for Barack Obama because of his skin color. Another is John McCain's health; the reality he's likely to become senile or die if elected President. The third is the truth that McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, represent the worst kind of family values. Obama's Race: At the Denver Democratic Convention, Southern delegates were candid about the impact of race on the November presidential election. Florida Dems felt it would be hard for Obama to carry their state because of the number of voters who say they "will never vote for a black man." Delegates from Georgia and North Carolina made the same observations. But racial prejudice isn't restricted to the South. Dems from swing states, such as Ohio and Pennsylvania, said Obama will have a hard time with certain demographics because of his skin color. Here in Northern California there are voters who will not support Obama because they've heard he's a Muslim or they don't like Michelle Obama - opinions that serve as proxies for "I won't vote for him because he's black" because bias isn't politically correct. A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll found that thirty percent of voters admitted to some feelings of racial prejudice. Yet, "nearly nine in 10 whites said they would be comfortable with a black pr ...

The L-word is getting bandied about with increasing regularity these days. And in the heat of the political season, it ain't "love." The Florida Democratic Party, shunning such softer-sound adjectives as "misleading" or "untruthful," has been hammering Republican politicians for being out-and-out liars. The latest: Jeff Atwater, the South Florida senator in line to become Senate president in November. Atwater's up with a new TV ad in response to a Democratic spot claiming he's too cozy with insurance interests. In his response, Atwater calls the Democratic attacks "shameless." "It's a lie, and he's a liar," said Linda Bird, the Broward Realtor challenging Atwater, in a press release this afternoon released by the Democratic Party of Florida. Earlier this month, the Fla. Dems called Republican presidential candidate John McCain a liar twice on the same day. One press-release headline screamed, "McCain Switches from Truthiness to Flat Out Lies." Another, regarding empty seats at a Jacksonville rally, said: "Media should expect the McCain campaign to lie about the attendance at the event as they have done numerous times in recent weeks." Eric Jotkoff, the Democratic Party spokesman, saw our post and wrote in with this update: "I can't help it if there are a lot of Republicans using flat out, bold faced lies these days. Clearly, not even half truths or misleading statements can cover up the Republicans' failed records and out-of-touc ...

clipped by: Wisco clipper's remarks: Oddly, presidential polling is mixed there , suggesting a tight race. Still, I can't see Team McCain celebrating this news. Clip Source: www.sun-sentinel.com An escalating number of voters registering as Democrats is providing evidence that the 2008 election could produce a wave of support for Barack Obama — and trigger a decades-long shift of party allegiance that could affect elections for a generation. The numbers are ominous for Republicans: Through May, Democratic voter registration in Broward County was up 6.7 percent. Republican registrations grew just 3 percent while independents rose 2.8 percent. Democrats have posted even greater gains statewide, up 106,508 voters from January through May, compared with 16,686 for the Republicans. "It's a huge swing," says Marian Johnson, political director for the Florida Chamber of Commerce. "I looked at that and said, 'Wow.'" Tags: news ...

By Kate Sheppard With only about three weeks left before Congress adjourns for election season, energy is the hot topic on the Hill. Here's where things stand: Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and other Democratic leaders in the House have outlined a new energy plan that proposes allowing drilling 100 miles off the Atlantic coast and Florida's Gulf coast. The buffer zone could be reduced to 50 miles if a state's governor and legislature consent (which is a big "if" ). The plan, which hasn't yet been formally released, also contains increased funding for renewable energy. They're calling it the "Comprehensive American Energy Security & Taxpayer Protection Act," and it includes a number of measures that have stalled previously -- curbing energy speculators, establishing a renewable electricity standard, and repealing subsidies to Big Oil. House Republicans are unlikely to go along with the proposal. Last week, before the Dems officially unveiled anything, House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) made it fairly clear that his party wants its energy bill or no energy bill at all. Yesterday he criticized the Democrats' new plan in a statement : "It leaves most American energy under lock and key when we should be doing everything possible to expand energy production, increase conservation, and promote development of clean, renewable energy. It would permanently lock up 80 percent of our nation's offshore energy resources -- holding hosta ...

Fresh off its successful effort to keep three constitutional amendments off the November ballot, the Florida Education Association now is pressing state election officials to keep their hands off the voter rolls in a year that looks strong for the Dems that the FEA supports. Specifically, FEA president Andy Ford has called for the state to suspend implementation of the "No Match, No Vote" law. The law attempts to match voter registration to other government databases, and kicks out registrants that don't appear to have any matching information. The idea behind the law was to prevent voter fraud. But Ford suggests it could have a more nefarious outcome. "Beginning the implementation of this law so late in this election season adds to the burden that state and county election officials are facing," Ford said in a news release. "Thousands of new voters will be looking to cast their votes on November 4th and this could result in large numbers of legal voters being denied their right to vote because of a simple mistake like a typo." To date, the state has not backed down. Gonna try and make it to the Cubs game tonight, which means that I've got a ton of work to do this afternoon, which means that ... you're getting a rare AM edition of Today's Polls. And it's a good one for Barack Obama: What's up with those Quinnipiac polls? Why have I listed them twice? Well, Quinnipiac broke its sample into two halves: pre-debate and post-debate. For all intents and purposes, these are two separate surveys, and so that's how I list them. Obama gained ground in the post-debate versions in all three states (OH, PA, and FL). More importantly, however, the polls represent significant gains for Obama since the last time Quinnipiac had been in the field in early September, particularly in Florida, where he had been 7 points behind before. The McCain camp is going a little crazy over these polls. Usually, when a campaign does something like that, it's worried about morale. But do their complaints have any basis in fact? Quinnipiac's polls have shown a slight Democratic lean this cycle -- they've been 1-2 points more favorable to Dems than contemporaneous polls of their states. From what I can tell, their head of polling (Peter Brown) has fairly conservative politics, so I don't know that it can be called a partisan lean. But that is the side that the polls have tended to end up upon nevertheless. At the same time, they are highly-rated polls, use large sample sizes, and have plenty of rich trendlines for comparison. I ...

Carlos McDonald/Telemundo51 (9/27-10/1, likely voters): Joe Garcia (D) : 41 Mario Diaz-Balart (R-inc) : 43 Undecided : 16 (MoE: ?5.7%) Both Garcia and Diaz-Balart are scoring roughly an equal amount of support from their own parties (81% of Dems are for Garcia, and 82% of Republicans side with Diaz-Balart), but Independents are breaking for the Democrat by a 44-38 margin. While the margin of error for this one is a bit portly, it's very close to the results we've seen from other pollsters. Research 2000 gave Diaz-Balart a 45-41 edge here a few days before this poll was conducted, and an earlier Bendixen poll from June showed a 44-39 race. And here's the scene in the 18th District, the toughest nut of the South Florida trio: Annette Taddeo (D) : 35 Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-inc) : 48 Undecided : 17 (MoE: ?5.7%) Taddeo has a slight edge (39-36) among Independent voters, and this is the first time that Ros-Lehtinen has been under 50 in a poll this year. Bendixen had Taddeo trailing by 27 points in June, and Research 2000 showed a 17-point Ros-Lehtinen lead last week. It's still a tough race for Taddeo, but these numbers offer some hope. After all, some incumbents who posted bigger leads than this in late September polls ended up feeling some November Pain in 2006. UPDATE (David): Telemundo also polled FL-21 (Raul Martinez vs. Lincoln Diaz-Balart) but hasn't released those numbers yet. However, they have offered the traditional bonus fi ...

You’d think with $2.5-million campaign war chest, Jeff Atwater wouldn’t need much campaign help. But, just in case, the Florida Republican Party is lending a hand by paying for mail and TV attacks against Atwater’s Democratic opponent Linda Bird, who has been getting advertising help from Florida Dems the past few weeks. Now, as a general rule, it’s tough to go after a political newcomer like Bird, who doesn't have a voting record to attack -- unless you want to attack them for not having a record. (And “the experience card” hasn’t exactly played well with voters this year.) So what do you do? In this case, attack the candidate by attacking their party. The anti-Bird ads use statements by other Democrats made before Bird even entered the race to accuse Bird and “Bird’s tax allies” of wanting to raise sales taxes, property taxes and retirement taxes. The statements refer to Democratic proposals like closing tax loopholes and changing the Save Our Homes cap. “We can’t afford higher taxes, lost jobs or Linda Bird,” the narrator concludes in the cable TV spot. State Republican Party officials said even though Bird didn’t make most of the statements referenced in the ad, they think it’s fair to assume Bird would support similar proposals if elected. “The Democratic Party is funding her campaign,” said Katie Gordon, press secretary for the Florida Republican Party. “So we have every reason to believe she will vote in lock-step with the ...
