Florence, Texas — A fast-moving fire has forced the evacuation of at least 150 people from their homes in the small Williamson County town of Florence. The state Supreme Court has tossed out Florence Mayor Frank Willis’ appeal of his one-vote loss in June’s Democratic primary. After hearing about the ruling Thursday, Willis told the (Florence) Morning News, “It’s over.” Willis lost by one vote in the June 10 primary to attorney Stephen Wukela. A recount found the same total, and the Democratic Party denied Willis’ appeal. After it was thought to be contained last night, the wildfire in Williamson County regained power. Since yesterday the fire has caused over 50 homes to be evacuated and has overtaken 3,700 acres. A brush fire that covered about 2,200 acres in Williamson County and caused officials to evacuate about 60 homes has been contained. No injuries have been reported, said Williamson County spokeswoman Connie Watson, and no homes were damaged. Watson said one outbuilding was damaged by the fire. The cause of the fire had not been determined Friday, and everyone who had been evacuated was allowed to return home late last night, she said. The fire ignited about 1:30 p.m. and spread through the drought-parched brush southeast of Florence. It was burning an area between Texas 195 and FM 487, pushed by shifting winds. Three helicopters and seven airplanes, including three tanker planes dropping fire-suppressing gel, aided firefighters from seven cities, Bell and Travis counties and the Texas Forest Service. Watson said 20 homes were evacuated on Pecan Branch Road, and about 40 homes were evacuated on County Road 233. At Florence Middle School, which was used as an emergency shelter, American Red Cross of Central Texas spokeswoman Elaine Acker said about 10 people arrived from the Pecan Branch area but left about 7 p.m. when they were allowed to return to their homes. Watson said that the fire was not spreading this morning, but firefighters are concentrating on hot spots within the burned area. It is still considered to be contained however there was a flare up on the south side of the fire near CR 239 and resources are addressing it. Meals start with a couple of dainty little biscuits which have a fine flavor that belies their powerful yeasty aroma. We began with Willapa Bay Oysters on the half shell, their cool ocean meat sprinkled with orange thyme vinaigrette, and a lavish plate of macaroni and cheese made with Tillamook cheddar, Willamette fontina, and Rumiano dry jack, its center creamy, its edges crisp and crunchy. Also not to be missed is Sidestreet's high-end version of creamy Northwest clam chowder, shot through with garlic flavor and laced with shreds of spinach. Entries included fried razor clams from Alaska served with crisp-edged fingerling potatoes and bursting-with-flavor ribbons of barely cooked organic carrot. The clams were tender and bright, veiled in a fragile crumbly crust; they were accompanied by lemon aioli.
