ROCKFORD — The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Saturday that more than $2.3 million in individual disaster assistance grants has been approved for Illinois residents affected by the flooding. Patrick Richards, spokesman for FEMA, said the individual assistance funding continues to increase because residents affected by the Flood have registered. “It’s still important for people to register,” he said. “I know some people are staying with families and friends and they may not have gone back home yet, but they should still call to register.” Flood Victims can call 1-800-621-FEMA to register. The sooner they register, he said, the sooner they will receive assistance. About 1,244 homeowners from 18 Illinois counties have applied for assistance. Once people have registered, Richards said, the next step is for people to clean up their home. Richards said homeowners must be careful when they go back to their home because some damage could pose injuries. Homeowners should fire-check the outside structure of their house, looking for cracks or holes, he said. The first time they go back home, they should make sure the utilities have been turned off before going inside. Furniture could have shifted or been pushed onto larger, dangerous pieces of furniture, he said, such as bookcases or other shelving. Homeowners also should look for sagging ceilings, cracked door frames or support beams. If people are using generators, they should be ...
