The muck is like some kind of monster. The slime grabs you and doesn’t want to let go. It’s slicker than ice and as dense as peanut butter. Call it quicksand without the attitude. For people who continue the massive Cleanup from near-record flooding in the Hannibal region, mud is a constant companion. It coats just about everything the bloated Mississippi River has touched. Brothers-in-law Frank Lawson and Stanley Pairmore had no trouble spotting the floodwater’s reach Monday as they boated to Lawson’s vacation home in the Port Marmac subdivision south of Clarksville. “That’s how high it got,” Pairmore said as he pointed toward a tree with an obvious watermark. “I’d say that’s about six feet high, wouldn’t you?” Lawson asked as he steered the outboard toward the house. Both men live in St. Charles County. They’re retired, but love working outdoors and don’t mind the whims of the river. “There are very few things that bother me, and this doesn’t,” said Lawson, who has insurance. “It’s part of life. If don’t phase me one way or the other.” As he scooped four-inch-thick mud from Lawson’s basement floor, Pairmore was even more philosophical. “I would be splitting wood if I wasn’t doing this,”  Pairmore said. “I figured I’d rest a bit by doing this and then go back to what I’ve got to do.” Both went through a Cleanup earlier this spring when the river made itself an uninvited guest. “We know what we’re doing,” Lawson said as he used a ...

MACHESNEY PARK — The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Winnebago County Highway Department arrived in Machesney Park this morning with 18 trucks, end loaders and work crews to haul away Flood-damaged debris from hundreds of homes. The crews will work in the village hauling away debris, sandbags and yard waste until they are longer needed, village officials said. The crews also will be working in flooded areas of Winnebago County, South Beloit, Roscoe, Machesney Park, Loves Park and Rockford. Most roads in Machesney Park now are passable and clear of standing water, officials said. A few homes remain surrounded by floodwaters, preventing some residents from returning to their homes to begin the cleaning process. Village officials expect Cleanup to be ongoing for the next two months. ...

Karl Broseman would rather spend the holiday sitting by his pool, eating barbecue and drinking a cold beer. Instead, he’ll be into the fifth day of cleaning his Flood-damaged home on the corner of Killam and Walnut streets in Winfield. And he’ll hardly be alone. Hundreds of Flood victims in the Hannibal region continue the wearisome task of exacting order out of a rancid mess. Broseman, a carpenter who also is a certified electrician and plumber, has been through four previous floods in Winfield. So, he was prepared. “I took everything out of the house - all the molding, all the trim, all the furniture, everything,” Broseman said. “I gutted it.” High water put him and his wife out of the house for two weeks. The couple returned Monday after staying with their son, Butch, in Elsberry. “It was a mess,” Broseman said. “Muddy muck. Green slime. It was terrible.” Broseman estimates he’s used more thann 30 gallons of bleach in addition to a lot of heavy-duty mold cleaner. He hoped to wrap up interior work Thursday and start on the outside of the house Friday. Nicci Lenk waited Thursday for an inspector to boat out to her family’s flooded two-story farmhouse along Crenshaw Road near Winfield. She hadn’t seen it for 10 days, but already had a picture in her mind. “We know pretty much what we’re going to find,” Lenk said. “There’s water in the house and it stinks.” Lenk, her husband, Kerry Morton, and their six-year-old son, Daman Morton, ...

The holiday weekend doesn’t mean a four-day break for some government and law enforcement officials in Winnebago County who will assist Flood victims throughout the weekend. Linda Vaughn, president of the Machesney Park Village Board, spoke at a media conference Thursday to encourage residents to continue with the Cleanup process and schedule building inspection appointments with the Winnebago County Building Department. About 600 homes were affected by the Flood in the Machesney Park area, Vaughn said, and several residents have been able to move back into their homes. Almost 80 homes have been inspected by the building department. Once the building inspector gives the OK, utility providers should be called to schedule a time to reactivate the service. Residents should take photos of the damage for insurance purposes and then, they can begin the removal process, she said. “It won’t be a Fourth of July weekend with parties and cookouts for many people,” Vaughn said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will open a disaster center at the Michaelsen Office Furniture building, 8010 N. Second St., on Monday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The dumpsters in the neighborhoods should be emptied Thursday night and Saturday, said Bob Springer, deputy chief of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. Residents can put debris and sandbags curbside for trash removal, he said. The sandbags should not be reused because they are infected with the floo ...

Because Jesus came to heal, they’ve come to help. Baptist and Methodist church groups are lending a hand to families who must clean out their Flood-damaged homes in Monkey Run. Just about everyone in the tight-knit community along Highway 79 south of Hannibal was affected by the high water. Volunteers “have been doing a tremendous job,” said Monkey Run resident Sarah Kurz. “I don’t know what we’d do without them. There’s so much work that needs to be done.” Christina Herren’s garage served as a lunchroom for workers Thursday. Food was provided by Douglass Community Services and Ralls County residents. Herren and her father performed a pre-lunch concert as a sign of their gratitude. “It’s been a blessing,” Herren said of the volunteers. “They came to us and asked us what we wanted. They’ll do anything.” For their part, workers have taken time off from jobs or postponed retirement projects to help. The volunteers represent St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Murfreesboro, Tenn., the American Baptist Men from Missouri and Illinois, and Americorps. They strip Flood-damaged houses, but don’t make repairs. Residents who don’t have Flood insurance could be eligible for federal assistance or a buyout. Don Rogers of the American Baptist Men said the work is rewarding. “We helped a lady who didn’t know where she was going to turn,” Rogers said. “She said, ‘Boy, am I glad to see you guys.’” Rogers said he’s used a chainsaw many times, but ...

Amber Cash came all the way from Maryland to assist Fond du Lac area residents in battling the mold that ravaged their homes after floodwater receded. Jill Grosso had driven up from Mobile, Ala., to work at her side. Dressed from head to toe in white plastic jumpsuits, both Americorps volunteers joined a group of 14 others Saturday as they scrubbed and bleached two homes on North Military Road. Throughout the community, 50 volunteers trained in mold remediation were hard at work Saturday as part of Community Cleanup Day. Led by the Rev. Ellen Rasmussen, disaster response coordinator for the Winnebago District of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), young and old provided elbow grease to clean out basements, remove molded items and disinfect the interior and exterior of homes, some of them gutted. I came here to help today because people are coming here from all over to help us, said Mary Gorske, a member of Holy Family Parish in Fond du Lac. I feel strongly that we should also be helping ourselves. As the two-month anniversary of the June 12-13 Flood approaches, many residences remain in disrepair and some people still cannot return to their homes, Rasmussen said. Her church, Community United Methodist in North Fond du Lac, has been heading up the coordination of volunteers, including a Methodist team from Michigan. Some of the houses initially cleaned up have experie ...
