Once again the U.S. military is conducting major combat operations in Baghdad's Sadr City slum. Urban street fighting, daytime air strikes, refugees Fleeing, the whole 9 yards. The targets are Shiite extremists who have been killing our troops and obstructing the so-called progress of a freely elected Iraqi government. Oh yeah, we are winning but we have to do this sort of thing from time to time -- no biggie. So for the foreseeable future the violence rages on, US troops will continue to die, Iraqis will die, and according to President Bush it is all for the cause of our freedom here at home. The Iraqi insurgents hate us for our freedom -- didn't ya know? Will Americans ever wake up to the harsh reality that is Iraq? At this point it is too frustrating to care or look for an answer to that ridiculous question. Sort of like the definition of insanity when stated as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." I'm very close to embracing the truism that I can do nothing to stop this tragic war that has been enabled, encouraged, and carried forward by our cowardly Congress along with millions of careless and complacent citizens of this country who, for the most part, have no stake in the game. On that note .... Let me tell you who the people are who do care and do have a stake in the game. They are the servicemen and women that make up the Individual Ready Reserve. Most have ...

While the rate of Iraqis Fleeing their homes has been lower in the last several months than before, it still looks like only the biggest risk-takers or those with the shortest journeys are ready to bet on a return. They face tough conditions in their old homes--including poor services and low employment, but many say they feel safe. A new report from the Switzerland-based International Organization for Migration (www.iom-iraq.net/idp.html), perhaps the best record-keepers of these things, says they have counted about 80,000 Iraqis (13,030 families multiplied by their standard six per family for 78,180 individuals) who have returned to their original neighborhoods from around Iraq or abroad. The report notes that these figures are likely the "majority" of those who have returned, but there's no comprehensive registry of these movements. So the real figure could be more than 150,000 – a sizable amount but just a fraction of the more than 3 million who have fled their homes or country since 2003.  The bulk of the movement since 2003 came in 2006 with the escalation in sectarian killing. The group interviewed 900  returning families. It's not a fully representative sampling of all returnees and there are some puzzling trends. For example, the number of returns for March, 2007, is much higher than any month before or after. But it looks like those coming back are probably the most fearless--they stuck it out longer in their homes and retu ...

Another Iraqi unit has fled rather than fought, Michael Gordon reports. A company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions on Tuesday night in Sadr City, defying American soldiers who implored them to hold the line against Shiite militias. The retreat left a crucial stretch of road on the front lines undefended for hours and led to a tense series of exchanges between American soldiers and about 50 Iraqi troops who were Fleeing. Capt. Logan Veath, a company commander in the 25th Infantry Division, pleaded with the Iraqi major who was leading his troops away from the Sadr City fight, urging him to return to the front. “If you turn around and go back up the street those soldiers will follow you,” Captain Veath said. “If you tuck tail and cowardly run away they will follow up that way, too.” Captain Veath’s pleas failed, and senior American and Iraqi commanders mounted an urgent effort to regain the lost ground. An elite Iraqi unit was rushed in and with the support of the Americans began to fight its way north. This episode was a blow to the American effort to push the Iraqis into the lead in the struggle to wrest control of parts of Sadr City from the Mahdi Army militia and what Americans and Iraqis say are Iranian-backed groups. No kidding. Then again, it’s not terribly surprising. Aside from the Republican Guards and other elite units, the Iraqi military was pathetic even under the iron rule of S ...

About 30 percent of the respondents said they felt a general insecurity about their home country, while 8 percent said their homes in Iraq were destroyed or occupied by someone else. The unrest has uprooted about 4.7 million Iraqis, the U.N. Tell me that this doesn't sound like something out of a history of Nazi tactics in World War II:The rules [of engagement]t explicitly allowed the killing of unarmed Iraqis under certain circumstances...Specifically, the snipers were allowed to shoot unarmed people running away from explosions or firefights....Of course, it's not unusual for innocent people to run from explosions.Didier, who has since been promoted to captain, said that "if that individual makes contact with you and then breaks contact of their own accord and disarms themselves while they are breaking contact, they are still an engageable target because they are not wounded, nor did they surrender." He explained, "They are only breaking contact so that they can engage coalition forces at a later time." In court, Sgt. Anthony Murphy, one of the snipers who was responsible for a questionable kill, testified that he interpreted this order about breaking contact so they can engage at a later time as: "Engage Fleeing local nationals without weapons." In other words, if an innocent, unarmed Iraqi runs away to seek safety from a suicide bombing, a missile attack or a gunfight -- which any human being would instinctively do -- then he is fair game to be killed by an American sniper. The excerpt above comes from a story in Salon.com, "Killing by the Numbers, (http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/05/09/snipers/)" about an "elite" U.S. sniper squad that murdered a captured, unar ...

Muqtada al-Sadr's scheduled protest for 9 April (yesterday) was, of course, called off in a hurry, as refugees were Fleeing the city under bombardment. The air attacks continue to mount up, the latest reported attack killing ten Iraqis - in a "militia stronghold", of course. Loud explosions are being heard all over Sadr City as violence across Baghdad 'spirals' . It isn't hard to see why this is happening. Sadr City is, as I mentioned , a vast, populous area, larger than Basra or Najaf. It is the key area of Sadrist resistance, the base from which the movement's strengths emanate. But why now? Previously, when Sadr has humiliated the occupiers and their local chumps, there has been a period of backing off and a brief, negotiated peace. This time, having watched Maliki fail, the US is upping the ante. Well, although Maliki was indeed humiliated, and had to run to Iran for a settlement before begging for fifty of his armoured cars back from the insurgents , he seems to have been told by the US to get back down to it. Gen. Petraeus expects the Basra crackdown to last for another few months . So, as America bombs from a great height, "Iraqi forces" are sent in to do the ground work. Presumably, the reasoning is that if the Sunni north holds, there is no reason to hold back in Baghdad and the south. Of course, there were still hundreds of attacks even in the relatively peaceful months since September 2007, m ...

What was the latest John McCain fart-burger about Iraq on the bullshit express , oh yes... As you know, we saw a thousand police and military desert their posts. But the rest of the military did a pretty good job , did a pretty good job. We did secure the port of Basra. Maybe I’m digging for the pony here. Ah, yes, the rest of the Iraqi military... how's that workin' out in the real world? A company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions on Tuesday night in Sadr City, defying American soldiers who implored them to hold the line against Shiite militias. The retreat left a crucial stretch of road on the front lines undefended for hours and led to a tense series of exchanges between American soldiers and about 50 Iraqi troops who were Fleeing. Capt. Maybe there are a few facts going on here: 1. Iraqis think the political power play amongst Shiite sects is bullshit, especially when it is aimed at the most popular one. 2. Iraqis don't appreciate being ordered around by foreign occupiers, even if #1 isn't always applicable. 3. ...

Baghdad, Iraq - The Faili Kurds are one of the most oppressed groups of Kurds. Like other Kurds, they were abused during Saddam Hussein's regime . Statistics from the United Nations show that more than 450 thousand Faili Kurds were deported to Iran in the 1980s and nearly 10 thousand Faili Kurds between the ages of 13 and 30 years old are still missing until the current moment. A large number of this Kurdish minority fled out of Iraq to a number of other countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France . They were Fleeing the bad circumstances they endured under several governments that ruled Iraq. Now, despite the fall of Saddam Hussein and the work of many citizens toward establishing a democratic Iraq, the Faili Kurds still face several difficulties. Among others, until now, they did not receive the same rights as other Iraqis. The Charitable Liberated Faili Kurds Organization works in Baghdad to attempt to redress these wrongs. They work in particular to support displaced Faili Kurds to enable them to return to their homes in Baghdad and elsewhere. They also advocate for the approval of full citizenship for Failis. Due to the inadequate social services available to Failis and other poor Iraqis, they also run a medical clinic on Palestine St. in Baghdad which is available to all needy Iraqis. For more information about Faili Kurds, please see this site ostensibly run by Faili Kurds , or you can read a ...
