Reader Alex B. sent in this — Fantastic Contraption — a physics Flash Game where you string together wheels and joints in order to carry an object toward a goal on the screen. It's nice nonviolent trial-and-error fun, indulging both the competitive urge to be as efficient as possible, and the creative impulse to be as outlandish as you can get away with. The opening tutorial is pretty helpful, and many of the opening levels are easy to beat in minutes or seconds. As for the general appeal of Flash games, I think XKCD summed it up best. Fantastic Contraption [Site, thanks Alex B] ...

So, how good do you think you are at eyeballing things? Can you tell if you’re looking at a right angle? How about finding the center of a circle? Seems easy, right? Well, maybe not. Here’s a fun little Flash Game to test your skillz: Link (My score is a paltry 5.35 - so I relatively suck [...] ...

 I've just done something really stupid and accidentally ejected my Windows HD from my Mac desktop. For some reason the system decided it was to be called "NO NAME" and it uses the same name for my small Flash drives. Sometimes they seem to have a slow Game of leapfrog with one icon sitting on top of the other. Usually I move the top one to make sure there's nothing underneath. Unfortunately this time when ejecting the Flash drive I didn't double check and my Windows "NO NAME" was what I ejected. It isn't there for me to use in System Preferences so could someone tell me how to fix the situation so that I can get into the few programs I need to use that won't run on my Mac desktop. I've only been using a Mac (Mac OSX) for 2 months so very inexperienced with the way things work on this machine. Thanks very much. ...

Filed under: Rockets , NBA Videos , Interviews Elie Seckbach, the Embedded NBA Correspondent, brings his exclusive video reporting to FanHouse. Check back regularly for more videos. Rafer Alston is not a conventional NBA player. The former street-ball legend with a cult-like following has transformed his Game from Flash to function. But he's still retained his wit and sense of humor. In this video, we talk to the Rockets point guard about his mad skills, reality TV, Kim Kardashian, which players' jerseys he would rock, and (of course) his NYC roots. Watch our "pesky" interview with Alston after the jump. Youtube link .   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

It's football season, which means it's also the season for at least one heartwarming and inspiring movie about the sport. This year the film comes from Universal -- The Express , a biopic of Ernie "The Elmira Express" Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman trophy, back in 1963. However, the movie divides its time between Davis and his coach at Syracuse University, Ben Schwartzwalder, and shows the ways in which the two characters changed one another (for the better, natch). The movie opens during the notorious Cotton Bowl Game of 1960, when Davis ( Rob Brown ) was a running back on the Syracuse University team that played The University of Texas, which had not yet allowed black varsity team members. It's a rough Game, but Davis is handling himself until all hell breaks loose ... and then we Flash back to Davis's childhood in the 1940s and see how he learned to handle nasty racist situations even at an early age. He's stubborn and he's speedy, and eventually decides to use those assets to strive for his goal of playing professional football. His idol, Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown, advises Davis to play for his alma mater Syracuse because Schwartzwalder ( Dennis Quaid ) is such an excellent head coach. But Davis encounters difficulties in the ways Schwartzwalder handles the black team members. The coach's primary goal is to avoid "trouble," so they're warned away from the white female students, and worse ye ...

[Every week, IndieGames.com: The Weblog editor Tim W. will be summing up some of the top free-to-download and commercial indie games from the last seven days, as well as any notable features on his sister 'state of indie' weblog.] This week on 'Best Of Indie Games', we take a look at some of the top independent PC Flash/downloadable titles released over this last week. Game Pick: ' Tumbledrop ' (dock, browser) "A physics-based puzzler created by Hayden Scott-Baron, a character artist whose work can be seen in the recent WiiWare release LostWinds . Much like Gabriel Ochsenhofer's Totem Destroyer , the goal of the Game is to get the pink star down to the island in each stage without dropping it in the sea." Game Pick: ' Karoshi Suicide Salaryman ' (Jesse Venbrux, browser) "A Flash implementation of the popular platformer series, where players must once again find unorthodox methods to assist our suit-wearing protagonist commit suicide." [Reporting from Tokyo Game Show, I took a look at the fortunes of the major console creators -- is TGS a bust or a boon for their fortunes in Japan and worldwide? Straightforward opinions and show floor impressions ensue...] Looking over the 2008 Tokyo Game Show, one of the main factors an interested onlooker might consider is how the console manufacturers are handling the show. Both Microsoft and Sony, currently dueling for position in the worldwide market, sought a strong showing at TGS. Sony needed to convince consumers that its recent loss to the Xbox 360 in the monthly Japanese sales charts was just a one-off. On the other hand, Microsoft needed to convince the assembled masses its momentum in the territory was not a Flash in the pan. As for Nintendo -- well, we'll get to them a little later. On Microsoft's Showing Let's start with Microsoft. It laid out its agenda in John Schappert's first-day TGS keynote, which we've already covered at some length here on Gamasutra. The Halo 3: Recon announcement was important for the world stage, if not as much for the Japanese market. But on the show floor, its key titles were surprisingly Japan-centric and well-received. Much of this has to do with Square Enix's high level of support for Microsoft's console, with The Last Remnant and a beautiful-looking Star Ocean: The Last Hope both playable at its large booth. Then there's Final Fantasy XIII , this year confirmed for Microsoft's console b ...

Grzegorz Kozakiewicz is a designer and art director with special interest in experimental forms of communication, animation, application design, strategy, user flows and online advertising.
