Ever get the feeling your parents/teachers/bosses are constantly hovering over you -- and in a very judgmental kind of way? Then imagine how this six-day-old Flamingo chick must feel. We don't know if the looming adult flamingos are his actual parents, or just fellow residents of the Flamingo community at the zoo in Hanover, in central Germany. Perhaps they are members of the Flamingo neighborhood watch, or on the screening committee determining if the little chick will be allowed in the Flamingo Club. I don't know if it's the look in the adults' eyes, the downward frown-like turn in their beaks, or  the perpetual question marks their necks form, but I'm not getting a proud parent vibe. It's more like, did you eat all your peas? Did you turn off that video game? Your teacher called today. Didn't we tell you to clean that nest? Where do you think you're going? Then again, I'm once again making the mistake -- fun as it might be -- of applying human values and attributes to animals, which is what we often tend to do, especially when they're those in zoos. So we'll just tell you that the birth of this little fella brought the zoo's Flamingo population to a nice even 100. (Photo by Getty images) ...

THURSDAY THIRTEEN The Pink Flamingo's 77th Edition Thursday Thirteen Thirteen Reasons Why "Green" Is a Crock I'm in one of my nasty moods.  I'm tired and way behind in my work, but had a great time in Tombstone last week.  I may even do a TT on some of the photos I took that may be a 'ghost'.  It was cool.  So now I'm back home, working on a TT I started assembling several weeks ago.  It is going to make some people a little snippy.  That's fine.  I think the 'chicken littles' are finally clucking home to roost, after ... ...

One might think that Hingham had become the setting for a retro movie about 1950’s suburbia or a 1970’s sitcom as flocks of pink flamingos populate lawns around the town. However, when the brash and whimsical lawn ornaments appear, they are courtesy of the Hingham Gridiron Club, the booster organization for the Hingham High School Football team. According to Ken Murphy, parent and fundraising coordinator, the concept has been well received and is generating a great deal of community camaraderie. Referring to himself as the “flock wizard,” Murphy has expressed his pleasure with the results of the project thus far. “I think we are changing the aesthetics of Hingham!” he laughed while explaining the mechanics of the venture. The Hingham Gridiron Club raises funds each year to provide various “extras” for the football team such as an annual banquet, team jackets and trophies. The concept of “flocking” was derived from a fundraiser discovered by Murphy when on a trip last year to Marietta, Georgia. As the parent of K.C. Murphy, a football team captain, he was anxious to introduce the notion of “lawn adornment for dollars” to the area. There are four flocks of 25 “flamingos” traveling about the town presently (soon to be joined by four more, due to the popularity of the stunt!) Under the direction of Murphy and John and Sheila Creahan, parents of Pat Creahan, also captain of Hingham football, team members, friends, neighbors and siblin ...

Today's microphone, for review, is called the Buddy Flamingo microphone. It is another model from InSync Speech Technologies. This is a very different style of microphone than the stylus microphone we have previously shown although it is from the same manufacturer. I found the Flamingo to be very accurate over all with approximately 97-98% accuracy. The microphone has a very unique concept that allows it to be moved by flexible tubing. The microphone is 24 inches long and it connects via an USB port. The flexibility of the microphone is what makes it appealing for me. It holds many positions fairly well. I did find that it would tend to droop when I placed it in a side USB port and tried to have it stand upwards on an angle. I also found the microphone seemed to add additional words when the fan on my laptop computer was running on high. What is interesting is that this did not occur with the air conditioner in the car. My testing in the car with the air conditioner running found that this microphone worked at least as well and possibly slightly better than the stylus microphone. I can only think that the noise from the laptop fan did decrease the noise canceling properties. Some of you may remember that I am always interested in how well a microphone picks up the small words. Overall, this microphone did well with that. It did seem to occasionally miss some small words such as a, an, and. I cannot explain the inconsistency with ...

Bar of the Week: Flamingo Bowl Where: 1117 Washington Avenue Web site: flamingobowl.net View Larger Map Has St. Louis become a city of nihilists? Has the loss of our great treasure , The Bowling Hall of Fame , sent us into a deep spiral of apathy towards all things ball and pin? Sadly, dudes, this could indeed be the case, as evidenced by the poor attendance as of late at the Flamingo Bowl . Owned by Joe Edwards, who also owns the swanky Pin-Up Bowl on Delmar, the Flamingo Bowl seemed primed for success when it opened in late 2007. As manager Vance Ivory explains it, they're just in the summertime slump that happens when people would rather be outside frolicking in the fresh air, rather than stuck inside, bowling. Ivory may have a point, but the fact that you can't even get a parking spot at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday tells you that the people are patronizing Washington Avenue bars in force; just not at the Flamingo Bowl. So, why isn't business booming? We have created a list of pros and cons. Just as you must eat the meat before you can get your pudding, we'll do the cons before the pros. ...
