Filed under: Home Entertainment , Networking We were all excited to stream Genius-generated playlists from iTunes 8 to our Airport Express last night when -- poof -- "-3256 Unknown Error Occurred." This cryptic error, along with another under the equally descriptive name "-15000," has been keeping iTunes 8 upgraders from using their Airtunes on remote speakers. Turns out the issue is one of Firewalls and Firmware. The solutions come from users at Apple's Discussion boards. Basically, you need to either turn off your Firewall and / or allow iTunes to accept incoming requests or update your Airport Express to the latest (7.3.2 as of this post) Firmware version via AirPort Utility 6.3. Meanwhile, Windows-based iPod touch users are seeing Blue Screens of Death when plugging in their players due to some other undocumented problem. The solution there looks to be a reboot with the touch plugged in to force the system to recognize the device, run a sync, and turn off photo syncing (not the most elegant solution, clearly). Let's hope Apple at least updates this with something more descriptive than "-3256" in the future. Customer service reps at Apple say they're aware of the problems and are working on a fix. For those that don't read the buried console thread, Sony has announced that the PS3's Firmware 2.5 will support sequential video playback. I know this is huge for those that wanted a video playlist-like feature. It's not quite that, but close. Discussion here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6400628 ...

Filed under: Developer , Macintosh , Apple If your Twitter feed just exploded with glee, it's because at long last, Apple has finally lifted the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) on released iPhone software! Apple has had an NDA in-place since the iPhone SDK was launched in March , ostensibly to protect the intellectual property behind the iPhone's interface from being ripped off my competitors. However, after the iPhone 2.0 Firmware was released and the App Store opened, the NDA still remained in effect. We've covered these issues at lenght at TUAW , but the bottom line is, because of the NDA, software developers cannot even openly communicate with one another about software or the SDK in general. This means censoring on Apple developer mailing lists and almost no public Discussion about programming for the iPhone. It's a mess for current developers and it is certainly a mess for would-be developers. Thankfully, Apple has decided to lift the restrictions on released software. While this still means that developers are bound by the NDA not to discuss or release details of their apps before it is released, this now means that developers can share experiences and what they have learned building currently available applications. After Google launched the Android SDK 1.0 last week, I really wanted to write up a Discussion between developers of what the experience is like developing for both platforms. The NDA prevented me from even seri ...

With Apple rumoured to be announcing the 2.1 iPhone Firmware and iTunes 8 at its big shindig tomorrow (we think our invitation must have been lost in the post), there’s some hope that the glacially slow iPhone backup and restore process will soon be addressed. In the meantime (or if Apple continues to ignore this issue), iPhone Atlas has what it claims is a potential fix. The pedestrian pace of the iPhone backup process seems to be caused by certain applications being installed, and a Discussion thread over at the Apple support forums (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1598363 tstart=0) suggests a few culprits. One is apparently VoiceNotes (iTunes App Store link (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284443322 mt=8)) and one user reports that uninstalling this app cut the iPhone backup time down from over an hour to less than a minute. We have no idea if this is true, not least because our iPhone 2G doesn’t have VoiceNotes installed and yet still takes an age to backup (and don’t get us started on the restore process…). Let us know in the comments of you’re suffering from slow iPhone backups – and if you’ve found a fix.... ...

As much as I love my iPhone 3G, I'm the first to admit it remains a flawed device . I couldn't see going back to my old Samsung BlackJack, but in many ways I sure wish the iPhone worked a lot better than it does. Despite the fact that Apple has released several software updates since iPhone 3G's launch in July, its software remains problematic. The 2.1 Firmware is much better, but it's still buggy. And lately, a co-worker with an iPhone 3G and I have been experiencing one of these flaws, bigtime. If you peruse this area on Apple's support Discussion forums , you'll see lots of people having problems with the iPhone's e-mail application. Specifically, since the release of 2.1, for some folks it seems to have a problem pulling in e-mail . Some folks see it with POP mail, others with IMAP, and still others with Exchange. Over the weekend, I was in the latter category. Here's what happens to those who fall victim: • In some cases, the iPhone's push feature quits working. The only way users who enable this feature get e-mail is to go in and manually refresh an account. • Sometimes, manually refreshing e-mail doesn't work. The mail application's status bar indicates it's checking for mail, but the mail never comes. Sent mail doesn't send. And deleted items don't delete, leading to . . . • E-mails deleted from the phone may not be deleted from the e-mail server, and become "stuck" in the phone's queue, with an error message indicating the ma ...
