The Duxbury Fire Department received a $2,625 Fire prevention grant from FM Global, a property insurer based in Rhode Island. KIRKSVILLE — The Kirksville Fire Department is hosting free seminars to organize a Community Emergency Response Team and teach survival fundamentals after a disaster. Classes will begin Oct. 9 at the Fire Department starting at 6:30 p.m. Approximately 20 hours of training will be spread over seven weeks. There weren’t any candles — perhaps they were a Fire hazard? — and the birthday cake was cheesecake as the Sea Breeze Volunteer Fire Association celebrated its 100th anniversary at a gala event Saturday night. But memories were plentiful as Irondequoit’s oldest Fire company — officially founded Oct. 9, 1908 — marked a century of community service with a banquet at the Country Party House in East Rochester. Those memories, and longtime member Tom Champion, “Are the reason a lot of us joined the Department,” said Dave Kraus, a volunteer with the company and a local real estate agent. Kraus, Tom Champion and his son, Mark Champion, shared some “war stories” from the Department and had the crowd of close to 200 in stitches. They recalled the time one of Irondequoit’s neighboring Fire companies roared up to help with a working Fire — and backed their truck into the building. Then there was what was known as “Sea Breeze ginger ale.” “My father was the mixologist for many years,” Mark Champion said. Tom Champion thinks the brew was “born during the Prohibition.” Kraus remembered the time the company was answering a Fire call at one of the stands on “hot dog row” and a customer — who was asked to leave — said he didn’t mind the smoke and finished his two cheeseburgers. “A lot of colorful people have gone through Sea Breeze over the years,” Mark Champion said.
