Purchasers of small, unconventional movies are scarce and increasingly skittish. CANNES, France -- "Che," an epic drama about the Cuban revolutionary, and "Baby on Board," a low-budget sex comedy, have scarcely anything in common except actors speaking lines in movies projected on a big screen. But both have come to the French Riviera with the same goal: finding distribution in an increasingly unreceptive market. ... Source: prweb.com --- 1 hour ago

The world of film is vaster than you imagine, and you'll glimpse part of that world at the second annual Create Carolina festival at Winthrop University. The theater component is the big one, but there's a funky film component, too, and it kicks off May 23 with “Trainwreck: My Life as an Idiot” at 8 p.m. in Johnson Theatre. Who can resist this synopsis: “a dramatic comedy about an attention-deficit-disordered, learning-disabled man with Tourette's syndrome who fights alcoholism on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the gold-digging girl who inspires him to try to get it together”? Seann William Scott lifts himself out of the “American Pie” ghetto with this film, which also stars Gretchen Mol and Jeff Garlin. Writer-director Tod Harrison Williams will attend the free screening and speak about the picture. You have former Charlottean Chandler Parker to thank: He has a small role (as “Angry Driver”) and is one of the movers behind the festival, along with Duke University grad Charles Randolph-Wright. He's also bringing in a film with which he had nothing to do: “A Man Named Pearl,” which is free at 8 p.m. May 24. That documentary about S.C. topiary wizard Pearl Fryar will feature an appearance by the artist. ... Source: www.concordia.ca --- 10 hours ago
