WHEN many people saw the costume designs for upcoming comicbook adaptation Watchmen, there was much groaning and eye-rolling over the nipples on the costume of Ozymandias and over the pointy headgear of Nite Owl. Oh no, it's Joel Schumacher's silly Batman all over again, people cried. Everyone remembers the nipples and neon - and how a franchise went down in flames. But those people failed to get the point. As Director Zack Snyder explains, Watchmen is a superhero story that explores the ideas behind superhero stories, a commentary on the genre of the costumed crimefighter. Snyder, who made Spartans-on-steroids war epic '300', told fans at San Diego Comic-Con that he has fully embraced the idea of the movie as a metaphor for superhero films in the same way that the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons deconstructed the comicbook genre. In a world where costumed crimefighters take on a responsibility to save the world, to whom are the vigilante heroes accountable? As the saying goes, who watches the watchmen? Snyder said: "It's not just superhero movies, you know. In Moore's book, it wasn't just comicbook literature, it was all of literature. You know, he's a very smart guy. So we definitely tried to reference as much sort of superhero cliche, movie cliche, as we could without it becoming self-aware. That's a fine line."
