One of the key components of the McCain hagiography, besides the downed planes and the wife-swapping is that he was a fearsome critic of the way President George W. Bush and Donald Rumsfeld prosecuted the Iraq War. OH! How he HATED it! Hated it something Fierce! But then John McCain bravely authored the philosophy of the idea of the notion of the strategy that became known as the SURGE ! And then, somehow, it became totally okay to hire one of the architects of the Rumsfeld plan as his foreign policy advisor . Am I trying to say that there are some inconsistencies in McCain's backstory on Iraq? Uhm, yyyyyyyyyeeeeeessssss. And now Jed Lewison of JedReport.com has just released his latest video , an extremely comprehensive collection of McCain clips (never-before-seen for most people) which chart the Arizona Senator's position on Iraq over the last several years, and puncture one of the candidates central contentions. Lewison writes : My newest video features John McCain talking about the Iraq war from 2002 through the present, exposing -- in his own words -- the lie behind his claim that he was the war's "greatest critic." It demonstrates his chilling commitment to Fighting this war no matter what the people of America -- or Iraq -- want. It is long -- nine minutes, thirty seconds -- but much of the material it contains will likely be new to you...and devastating to McCain. Take a look: ...

clipped by: Socratoad Clip Source: www.dailyme.com U.S. troops abandon Afghan outpost following attack KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. troops have pulled out of a remote outpost in northeastern Afghanistan, NATO-led security force said on Wednesday, three days after Taliban militants tried to overrun the base and killed nine U.S. soldiers. NATO played down the significance of the withdrawal, but Taliban militants are sure to claim victory in driving foreign forces out of the wooded valley, close to the Pakistani border. Taliban militants briefly breached the incomplete defenses of the newly established base in the Wanat district of Kunar province on Sunday and hours of Fierce Fighting ensued that killed nine U.S. soldiers and many more insurgents. It was the biggest single loss of life for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since 2005. ...

With my first embed complete and my second about to begin in earnest, I’ve begun to notice similarities in the way people here view the situation in Baghdad.  Everyone, from privates to captains, from journalists to civilians, seems to be experiencing a collective sigh of relief.  You’ll often hear mention of the Fighting from mid-March through May.  Soldiers I’ve talked to shake there heads and tell countless stories from that period, as if it were another time and another war.  The field artillerymen of Bravo Battery 5-25 spoke of standing on the roof of their headquarters and watching rockets stream toward the Green Zone.  They recounted rocket attacks on their own battalion headquarters that became so frequent, they would shrug their shoulders and continue with conversations when the alarm for “incoming” sounded.  Today I met my new unit: Charlie Company 2-30, an infantry company based out of Fort Polk, Louisiana.  Their area of operations is a roughly 10-square-kilometer chunk of eastern Baghdad, whose western limits border the tamed, but still dangerous, neighborhood of Sadr City.  The company is clearly used to intensive combat operations.  It was infantrymen from this unit who headed to the area when attacks became so Fierce that combat engineers refused to continue with construction of the wall built to isolate Sadr City.  I was told of main supply routes so densely populated with roadside bombs that simply bringing basic ...

Making headlines today are reports that Taliban fighters in the Afghan province of Kunar have killed nine US soldiers operating under NATO in a Fierce day-long attack on a US/Afghan military post. Some 15 other NATO troops were injured in the attack, which included Taliban machine gun fire, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars and which reportedly cost the lives of "dozens" of militants. If that's true, then it is likely that the attackers struck in considerable numbers. Meanwhile in Helmand, one other US soldier was killed in an IED blast. Reuters sums up the security incidents: FACTBOX-Security developments in Afghanistan, July 13 URUZGAN - Twenty civilians, most of them children, and four policemen died in a Taliban suicide attack in a bazaar on Sunday in Deh Rawud district of southern Uruzgan province, the interior ministry said, adding a senior police officer was also among the victims. KUNAR - NATO forces have suffered casualties during heavy Fighting with Taliban insurgents which erupted late on Saturday in eastern Kunar province, an alliance spokesman said on Sunday. GHAZNI - Taliban insurgents killed two women detective police officers and dumped their bodies in a ditch in a graveyard in Ghazni province on Saturday evening, a senior provincial police officer said. Lateness ensues once again. It was totally because we wanted to give you time to read our editorial first, though. *shifty eyes* Anywho, down to business. Meridell, Krawk Island, Roo Island, the Lost Desert, and the Haunted Woods all swept their opponents in yesterday's games. All of the above are top four contenders, but Meridell and the Woods are the only ones currently not there. Our first game of discussion of Kreludor vs. Maraqua. It wasn't a tough day at all for the Kreludans, as they pulled a win in Yooyuball and Make Some Noise. But the Maraquans know how to sling slushies with a passion, as their team took home a win in Slushie Slinger. Despite the one win from Maraqua, though, Kreludor still pulled up into fourth place, dominating over Mystery Island. With only five days of play left... can they keep it? Next, we have the Darigan Citadel vs. Tyrannia. As is customary, Tyrannia took their win in Slushie Slinger (seriously... where are they pulling all of those wins from!?) and a draw in MSN. With the finals on the line, this was certainly a bad day for the Darigan Citadel. If they have another day like this, they could be kissing any chance at the top four goodbye. Shenkuu, on the other hand, is shifting into upper gear as they pummeled poor Mystery Island to the ground yesterday. Fighting Fierce, and Fighting to win, Team Shenkuu easily received two wins in SS and MSN. Not wanting to lose it all, MI stepped it up in YYB, but ...

Near Miss, the Swiss GP42 yacht flying the colors of the Socit Nautique de Genve, dominated the 3rd event of the QUEBRAMAR GP42 Cup. After a total of 7 races the Swiss come first, followed by Roma GP42.2 and AIRIS. Desafo is still leading the QUEBRAMAR GP42 Cup but Near Miss grabs 2nd place from AIRIS Valencia, 13 July 2008: Early in the morning, the closing day of the Trofeo Reina Rolex Cup seemed to be dull and boring, given the light winds. Nevertheless, it turned out to be completely different and Valencias waters once again witnessed close and thrilling races, with the top 4 boats Fighting ferociously for the podium spots. After waiting for more than an hour for the breeze to build up and settle down, the first race started with a southeasterly wind of around 7-8 knots. The right side of the course was unquestionably the favored one and the whole fleet opted for it. A leading group of three boats was quickly formed, consisting of Roma GP42.2, Near Miss and Desafo, rounding the top mark in that order. In the first run, Near Miss overtook Roma GP42.2 who in their turn were holding a Fierce fight with Desafo for third place in the Trophy. Still, the race was far from over. In the second beat, Roma GP42.2 took the lead once again and watched Near Miss and Desafo staging a gybing duel. There was blood on Valencias waters, not only among the three leaders but also between Caser-Quum, Canarias Puerto Calero and AIRIS. With the breeze cl ...

Given the paucity of recent posting, I haven't been updating my online reading record. No gold star for me. here's what I've read in the past few months The Minotaur The Minotaur - Barbara Vine: Unthrilling thriller. Completely predictable and not particularly engaging - generally disappointing The Razor's Edge The Razor's Edge - W. Somerset Maugham: Strange title. Bought largely because partly set in Chicago, though actually mostly in Europe. Very thoughtful and philosophical. About a young man "in search of the Absolute". Well, aren't we all? Shalimar the Clown Shalimar The Clown - Salman Rushdie: A definite return to form for Rushdie, though not quite a classic. A story of Paradise not lost but crushed, trampled and ripped from limb to limb... Burn Marks Burn Marks - Sara Paretsky: Yet again, feisty female private investigator V.I. Warshawski is Fighting the forces of corruption and white collar crime in Chi-town. And yet again, she ends up discovering dead bodies and escaping from burning buildings. As always, a gripping read The Blind Assassin: A Novel The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood: A great book by my new favourite Canadian novelist. Well, to be honest, she was only up against Elizabeth Smart, so the competition wasn't that Fierce... Bleeding Kansas Bleeding Kansas - Sara Paretsky: A great title, but a bit of a messy book with too many ideas in it, nothing like the smooth efficiency of the V.I. novels. But I did love the s ...
