I'm often asked why there aren't more Female airline Pilots. It's obvious to anybody who travels that the vast majority of Pilots, be they military or civilian, commercial or private, are men. Perhaps it's the military culture that, for many decades, dominated the pilot ranks at most airlines. Or maybe there's something about flying, in and of itself, that naturally discourages women. Whatever the reasons, the field isn't as male dominated as it used to be. By the mid-1990s about 3 percent of all cockpit crew members in the United States were women -- a total of about 3,500, representing a 30-fold increase since 1960. Because most of these Pilots (along with many male Pilots, myself included) were hired in a relatively short span during the pre-2001 boom years, they tended to fall into those unstable lower portions of airline seniority lists, and were most vulnerable to furlough. To wit, their total dropped sharply, to around 1 percent, following the airline apocalypse triggered by Sept. 11, 2001. Then, as regional carriers began hiring like crazy, it started climbing again. Now, with the industry in the throes of yet another downturn, with several regionals laying off staff, it is once again falling. ... ...

Thirteen Female Air Force Reservists have a special mission this week – fly several women who are pioneers in military aviation to Texas for what could be their last reunion. Capt. Lyndsey Goodman and the all-Female crew from Charleston Air Force Base are flying a C-17 transport to Georgia to pick up some members of the Women Air Force Service Pilots, commonly known as “WASPs.” “These women are a hoot,” Goodman says of the elderly World War II-era fliers. “They can talk your ear off. Their stories are amazing.” The women were to fly to Irving, Texas, where the reunion is scheduled for today through Sunday, said Capt. Wayne Capps, spokesman for the S.C. base. Goodman met several of the pioneer aviators at a conference last year. She said she didn't know exactly whom she might be flying, but that didn't matter because they all helped pave the way for people like herself to fly. “I think that generation of women is fantastic,” said Goodman, 29, who works as a jazz singer in civilian life and will sing the national anthem and some 1940s-era songs at the reunion. The WASPs flew cargo missions, towed training targets, moved aircraft and did other noncombat activities to free up more male Pilots for combat missions. There were 1,800 of them at the time. About 300 are sill living, and 150 are expected at the reunion. The women weren't considered part of the military until 1977, when President Jimmy Carter signed legislation that gave the ...

Sixty-four Female Pilots arrived in Mansfield last Friday, June 27, culminating a 2,400-mile trek which started in Boseman, Montana. The race — known as the Air Race Classic — is the only transcontinental air race piloted solely by women. Of the 36 two-person teams who had initially registered, 30 finished the four-day race. From Boseman, the flight path went through Miles City, Montana, then headed south to Aberdeen, South Carolina, Mason City, Iowa, Decatur, Illinois, and Frankfort, Kentucky, then headed north to Franklin, Pennsylvania, and Saratoga Springs, New York, before finishing in Mansfield. The event marked only the second time in more than 30 years that the race has finished in Massachusetts. It finished in Hyannis in the year 2000. Local pilot Kathy McDonald, who lives in Easton and owns Mansfield Oil, served as president of the race committee and has been working tirelessly for more than a year to make the event the success that it was. “ I am just so proud to have been able to be a part of this and to share it with this area. My committee and the volunteers who helped out have made this a successful event,” McDonald said. “I have so much respect for all the people of Mansfield who have participated in making it a success. Our volunteers have given 100 percent to make this a success and pleasure for the Ladies of the Sky. I am so blessed and wish to thank them all.” McDonald, who has been a pilot for 14 years, said that it w ...

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 02 September 2008, 04:00 GMT] Sinhala Airlines now working under the umbrella of the Sinhala Lanka Air Force (SLAF) recently appointed their first Female Pilot Anusha Siriratne the carrier said in a statement. Following the repeated destruction of the SLAF fleet (along with the Sinhaloid Navy just last Tuesday) by the superior Tamil aircraft flown by superior Tamil male Pilots, the pathetic air farce has had to induct civilian aircraft to carry out AERIAL GENOCIDE on Tamilian peoples, properties, livestock, wildlife and other Tamil only flora and fauna such as our gay bars, petting zoos and child play camps. "Formal training involved bombing runs over Tamil trees, tractors, fishes, goats and Tamilish civilians. Its SLAF policy to avoid Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) bases and bunkers because the LTTEs advanced automated defence system scares us away" the statement quoted Siriratne as saying. "It doesn’t make a difference whether you are a man or a woman when flying-as long as you are not Tamil" "The circumstances don’t change, the weather is the same, the Tamils on the ground in the sea and some in mid air don’t know the difference!" Siriratne said women have lagged behind in the field of aviation in Sri Lanka, in comparison to the rest of the world. "Even in neighboring countries such as India, women have been airline Captains for many years now," she said clearly ignoring Tamil accomplishments from bra bo ...

Life On Mars was one of the most thrilling shows on British TV in recent years, the story of a cop who gets in a car accident and finds himself in the early 1970s. An American remake started up, produced by Ally McBeal's David E. Kelley, and it had one of the worst Pilots I've ever seen. A retooled version, with new producers and a cast headlined by Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Moll and Lisa Bonet, airs next Thursday at 10 on ABC. After talking to star Jason O'Mara and producer Josh Appelbaum today, I'm mildly optimistic. Spoilers, and more new preview videos, below. O'Mara and Appelbaum took part in a conference call with reporters today, and they talked about the changes they were making to the British version of the time-travel cop drama. I was somewhat startled to hear O'Mara's Irish accent — I hadn't realized he's yet another one of the giant crop of non-U.S. actors doing fake American accents. Apparently he has a "dialect coach" with him on the set every single day, to help him do a convincing New York cop voice. His accent is great, but he may suffer from the same wooden delivery that affected Michelle Ryan in Bionic Woman , because he has to worry about the accent all the time. Women on Mars: I asked them about the show's Female characters. Sam's girlfriend, Maya, is back in 2008, but with a big-name actress like Lisa "Cosby Show" Bonet playing her, it seems like they'd want to feature her a lot. And indeed, ...

“Survivor” creator Mark Burnett, who has already teamed with everyone from Steven Spielberg to Donald Trump, is now in business with Sean “Diddy” Combs. The reality mogul is working with the hip-hop impresario to launch the tentatively titled “Starmaker,” a music competition series for MTV designed to find both a male and a Female solo superstar, each of whom will be signed to a deal with Mr. Combs’ Bad Boy label. It’s one of more than a dozen projects—including a reality show about bullies and a TV take on the “Rock Band” video game—that Mr. Burnett has in various stages of productions. Mr. Burnett’s packed slate comes as his iconic CBS series “Survivor” is about to mark another milestone with next week’s transition to HD. It’s the first CBS reality show to shoot in high definition, and the only non-studio-based reality series on a broadcast network to use the format. “For people who have HD sets, there’s no doubt the viewing experience will be great,” Mr. Burnett told TelevisionWeek. “It adds so much to the beauty of the show.” Of course, the first HD season of “Survivor” filmed several months ago, making it somewhat old news for the perpetually forward-thinking Mr. Burnett. During a brief interview, the reality guru steered the conversation to the slew of other projects his company is working on. “I think we have 10 series in various stages of posting and prepping, as well as five or six Pilots,” he said. The collaboration with ...

Plenty of Pilots are familiar with technology that tells us to "Turn right" or "Turn left" in a friendly Female voice -- because it's installed on the dashboards of our cars, fresh from Best Buy. Now Alaska Airlines will be the first airline to provide similar technology for all of its airplanes, to guide Pilots around airport runways. Their technology, however, fresh from Honeywell, will cost $20,000 per airplane. The airline started working with Honeywell three years ago to test the Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS), which provides Pilots with audible alerts when they approach and enter taxiways and runways. RAAS confirms runway identifications to help ensure Pilots are on the correct runway with enough distance to complete takeoff, and provides an audible warning if a pilot inadvertently accelerates for takeoff while on a taxiway. Alaska Airlines began installing RAAS on its Boeing 737s in July, and the fleet will be fully equipped with the aural alert software by the end of this month. ...

Thirteen Female Air Force Pilots and crew members from Charleston Air Force Base are flying to Texas to honor the pioneer aviators from World War II known as WASPs. Air Force officials say the special flight of a C-17 transport jet will carry a group of the now-elderly Female aviators from Robins Air Force Base in Georgia to a special reunion in Irving, Texas. Air Force Reserve Capt. Lyndsey Goodman is a pilot on the flight. Goodman says she met some of the WASP aviators last year, and is honored to help bring them to what may be the final reunion for the World War II veterans. The service of the Women Air Force Service Pilots wasn't recognized officially until 1977. About 300 are still living and 150 are expected at the reunion. ...
