Am J Public Health. 2008 Oct;98(10):1841-8 Authors: Choi KH, Hoff C, Gregorich SE, Grinstead O, Gomez C, Hussey W OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the efficacy of skills training designed to increase Female Condom use among women. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of 409 women, recruited from family planning clinics in northern California, who were randomly assigned to the experimental 4-session Female Condom skills training intervention or the comparison 4-session women's general health promotion intervention. Participants received Condom use instructions at baseline and male and Female condoms during the study. They completed audio computer-assisted self-interviews at baseline and at 3 and 6 months. RESULTS: At 3 and 6 months, women in the experimental group were more likely than those in the comparison group to have used the Female Condom at least once in the prior 3 months. The increase in the percentage of sexual acts protected by Female condoms from baseline to the 6-month follow-up was greater for the experimental group. The percentage of sexual acts during which any Condom was employed was higher in the experimental group at 6 months. There were no group differences in male Condom use. CONCLUSIONS: Outcomes suggest that skills training can increase Female Condom use and protected sexual act ... Source: www.africanews.com --- 31 days ago

METHODS: Cross-sectional study nested in a cohort of HIV-negative homosexual and bisexual men in the city of Belo Horizonte, Southeastern Brazil, followed up since 1994 (Horizonte Project). Of 1,025 subjects enrolled between 1994 and 2005, 195 volunteers who reported at admission having sexual relations with men and women during the previous six months were selected. A behavioral risk index, called Horizonte Risk Index, was estimated. It incorporates a constant assigned to each type of unprotected sexual act, adjusted for the number of sexual encounters. RESULTS: Sexual activity with men predominated; most considered themselves as bisexual (55%) and homosexual (26%). During the six months prior to the study, median number of casual male partners (4) was higher than both casual Female partners (2) and steady male or Female partners (1). During vaginal sex with a steady partner, the rate of inconsistent Condom use was 55%, compared to 35% and 55% in anal insertive and anal receptive sex, res ... Int J Infect Dis. 2008 Sep 6; Authors: Yao Y, Wang N, Chu J, Ding G, Jin X, Sun Y, Wang G, Xu J, Smith K OBJECTIVES: To analyze the risk factors, particularly sexual behaviors, associated with HIV infection, and to describe the risks for HIV transmission among male injecting drug users (IDUs) in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 314 IDUs in Yunnan Province was conducted. Information on demographics, HIV serostatus, and sexual and drug-using behaviors was collected. RESULTS: HIV prevalence among the study subjects was 59.9%. HIV infection was associated with older age (>/=27 years), early drug initiation (at </=20 years of age), and frequent injection (>/=once a day). Thirty-seven percent reported multiple sexual partners. Consistent Condom use rates were lowest with regular partners (23.8%), followed by 42.5% with casual partners, and 57.3% with Female sex workers. Ninety-eight percent of subjects received high 'HIV knowledge' scores. Few of the subjects who needed medical care sought it out. CONCLUSIONS: Despite awareness of HIV, needle sharing and unprotected sex persist in the population, and the HIV prevalence is high. Further interventions should not only seek to educate but also to reduce high-risk behaviors. PMID: 18778963 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 25 days ago

It was a prospective cross-sectional study in a sample of 510 individuals, 17% males and 82.5% females aged between 60 and 90 years. We used the Questionnaire on HIV for the Old Aged, which comprises the general characteristics of the participants and questions concerning HIV/AIDS, organized into the elements 'concept', 'transmission', 'prevention', 'vulnerability', and 'treatment'. Nearly half of the participants (48.4 %) reported having studied 4 to 7 years and the monthly income of 52.2% was of 1 to 3 minimum wages. In the dimensions concept and transmission, 49.4% had no idea about the asymptomatic phase of the infection, and 41.4% believed HIV could be transmitted by a mosquito bite. With regard to prevention and vulnerability, 25.5% did not know about the Female Condom and 36.9% considered AIDS a disease confined to men who have sex with men, sex workers, and injection-drug users. Regarding antiretroviral treatment, 12.2% ignored its existence. Elderly people in companionship groups have important misconceptions about HIV/AI ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 4 days ago

Rev Saude Publica. 2008 Oct;42(5):830-837 Authors: Malta M, Monteiro S, Lima RM, Bauken S, Marco AD, Zuim GC, Bastos FI, Singer M, Strathdee SA OBJECTIVE: To understand the social context of Female sex workers who use crack and its impact on HIV/AIDS risk behaviors. METHODODOLOGICAL PROCEDURES: Qualitative study carried out in Foz do Iguaçu, Southern Brazil, in 2003. Twenty-six in-depth interviews and two focus groups were carried out with Female commercial sex workers who frequently use crack. In-depth interviews with health providers, community leaders and public policy managers, as well as field observations were also conducted. Transcript data was entered into Atlas.ti software and grounded theory methodology was used to analyze the data and develop a conceptual model as a result of this study. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS: Female sex workers who use crack had low self-perceived HIV risk in spite of being engaged in risky behaviors (e.g. unprotected sex with multiple partners). Physical and sexual violence among clients, occasional and stable partners was widespread jeopardizing negotiation and consistent Condom use. According to health providers, community leaders and public policy managers, several Female sex workers who use crack are homeless or live in slums, and rarely have access to health services, voluntary counseling and testing, social suppo ... It's a dilemma that has frustrated global public health workers for years: How can we encourage Condom use in AIDS-prone countries whose populations may be skeptical or outright opposed to safer-sex practices? (Not to mention, how can we do this within the confines of George W. Bush's infamous "global gag rule" ?) Generally, the solution has been to launch public education campaigns touting the benefits of Condom use. But as the global AIDS epidemic shows no sign of letting up any time soon, we have to test new strategies. Family Health International, through its Aksi Stop AIDS (ASA) Project , is doing just that in Indonesia, where AIDS is on the rise and its prevalence among sex workers constitutes what the U.S. government calls a "severe concentrated epidemic ." Along with more traditional measures, the organization launched a program that provides working girls in the country's Malang district with an incentive for using condoms: lottery tickets. Sex workers receive a ticket for every 20 Condom wrappers they produce, and winners receive prizes like TV sets and DVD players. And the program seems to be working. The percentage of brothel-based Female sex workers with an STI has decreased from 8.5 percent to 7.9 percent in the past five years. In 2003, 65 percent of working girls said they never used condoms; by 2008, that figure had dropped to 40.8 percent. Public opinion on Condom use may vary from culture to culture, but appare ... Perhaps Obama dancing used to be like a Todd Palin Condom; neither likely existed due to lack of knowledge. But we DO now know there’s an Obama dance , thanks to Florida resident and rapper Bob Brown. It may, indeed, be the first dance created for a presidential candidate, as Brown says, though surely there was a Reagan Rumba or Clinton Chorus Line? I recall hearing of a Gerald Ford Foxtrot and, yes come to think of it the Jimmy Carter Cha cha cha was legendary in its day. “I created a dance that anyone can do,” says Bob Brown, creator of the Obama dance “whether you are old, young, male, Female, no matter what your background is, you will have fun doing this dance.” Lyrics with the moves include: “To the left, to the the left, to the left, if you’re going to vote for Obama to the left. Now step to the right, if you’re going to vote for Obama, to the right. Now back to the left …” In other words, the dance doesn’t leave much room for any other vote choice but one. Whichever way you roll, it’s a vote for O-town. The slow-paced rap that goes with it also involves a body dip, an Obama chant and everyone’s exhorted to “Put your Os in the air.” The video itself, directed by Adolfo Latorre also has a professional feel: ...
