The Obama Administration's announcement concerning it's vision for a reformed American health care system, a vision predicated upon a Government based option to private insurance, has provoked quite a debate--one that seems able to fill the op-ed pages of major newspapers on a daily basis. The arguments, both in favor of and against a government intervention into the health care realm, are for the most part legitimate, provocative, and varied. Opponents of the reform measures outlined by the President will generally put forth arguments that revolve around one or more of the following points: Complete Story » ...

Michael Steinberg submits: The New York Times posted the transcript of President Obama’s Tuesday, June 23 news conference . I though he expressed the right balance on Iran’s political situation and was refreshingly articulate and direct on the need for a government run health insurance plan for consumers. The President used the Republicans own logic to defend the need for a government option. President Obama: “Why would it drive private insurance out of business? If -- if private -- if private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality health care; if they tell us that they're offering a good deal, then why is it that the government, which they say can't run anything, suddenly is going to drive them out of business? That's not logical.” President Obama: “But just conceptually, the notion that all these insurance companies who say they're giving consumers the best possible deal, if they can't compete against a public plan as one option, with consumers making the decision what's the best deal, that defies logic, which is why I think you've seen in the polling data overwhelming support for a public plan.” The President came just short of refusing to sign legislation that did not contain a public option , indicating he will be expending unlimited political capital to get it. The logical extension of his argument would be if Fedex (FDX) and [[UPS]] have prospered by competing with the Post Office, why can’t Aetna (AET) ...

"Don't relax, it's Fedex." In an attempt to simplify and streamline your package tracking, Fedex ( NYSE:FDX ), created an App for iPhone , but the finished product  doesn't save you any time or effort compared to tracking it on the website- A method which is now considered the old-fashioned way by many of us. I installed the Fedex mobile App a few months ago, but I never had much use for it until a few days ago, when I sent a very small package to a hotel in Virginia, where my girlfriend is staying for a week-long conference. I wanted to ensure that it arrived right on time for her 27th birthday. With my receipt and tracking number in-hand, I figured the Fedex pp would simplify the entire tracking process, but as ESPN's Lee Corso would say: "Not so fast,my friend." Once the app loaded, I realized I had to register as a Fedex user to login.  I clicked the "register online" button and proceeded to the next screen, where I was informed there was a processing error. On my second attempt, I successfully completed my registration form, which included my full name, address, etc.   Despite the fact that I  submitted all of that personal data, the app couldn't apply that data to locate any of my packages. I scanned the screen for any clue to where I could at least enter my tracking number. I clicked, "Add", because it was the only option that seemed relevant. To my delight, a prompt read "enter your tracking number." I obliged, and my pack ...

Andy Kern submits: While Fedex was widely reported on Wednesday to have beaten estimates for the fourth quarter, I think this interpretation is misguided. While the Q4 EPS of $0.64 was indeed higher than the consensus estimate of $0.63, what stands out to me is that revenues declined by 20% overall, which is a far greater drop than expected. Three weeks ago I wrote about Fedex’s Required Business Performance and noted that its stock price of $53/share implied that revenue would decline by only 2.4% in the foreseeable future. With the fourth quarter’s results now in, it is apparent that things will need to get much better quickly for the company to catch up. Complete Story » ...

Edward Harrison submits: Last month I said that June was significant for two reasons. First, we are going to get our first test of data that could disappoint, which would spell trouble for an overbought market . But, just as important, we need to watch the industrials because there is going to be no sustainable recovery unless these cyclical companies are leading the way. If the recent awful earnings report from Fedex (FDX) is any indication, this sector is still in a world of hurt. The Globe & Mail has a good take on how this is shaping up . Fedex’s forecast yesterday was certainly no green stalk. During the rally that began in March, its shares surged 80 per cent by early May as investors bet that a full financial meltdown and economic depression were not in the works. That’s about double the move of the broad S&P 500 over the same period, and it reinforced the belief that freight haulers are barometers for the global economy. Complete Story » ...
