The Chicago Tribune 's resident critic Blair Kamin has had a lot to talk about starting this weekend, as the sad news of Mies van der Rohe 's rural masterpiece, the Farnsworth House , has succumbed to flooding, following the massive amounts of rain we received here in the midwest over the weekend. In his first post on his blog, he looks over to Vikki Ortiz 's story about the flooding and the worries over how much damage will be done. In his second, he reports on the damage , with the waters rising far enough to make a big mess and causing the House to close for tours until next year, but saying that things certainly were not as bad as they could have been. In his most recent post, he offers up a discussion on how this flooding, which seems to happen every decade or so, could be avoided in the future , even if it means doing the unthinkable, like relocating the house to higher ground. In the end, we're very happy the House seems to be doing okay and we, personally, hope it stays put and remains dry for the rest of eternity. More information is available and donations can be made at Landmark Illinois' site . New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

Returning to a story from the other day about the flooding at Mies van der Rohe 's Farnsworth House here in rural Illinois, the organization that runs the historic house, Landmark Illinois, has begun to use their site as a blog with updates on the restoration process . And it isn't just "things are looking better every day!" sorts of posts. Sure to be of great relief to all the Farnsworth fans who watched helplessly as their icon drowned, they look like they're set to lay it all out and be completely forthcoming with all the details, including, most recently, talking about the troubles they've run into with their insurance provider and all of the number of problems the flood water caused, such as: The most significant and costly damage has occurred around the core. We will have to reconstruct the three doors (two bathroom doors and the mechanical room door) as they have swollen and can no longer close. The wing walls have expanded and the seams are gaping, the core has some significant areas of delamination, and what appears to be glue induced discoloration of the veneer below the flood line. The kitchen cabinets are showing rust and there are still several locations we haven't managed to investigate because the analysis requires further deconstruction. They're also asking for donations, which we know we just talked about a minute ago, with patrons no longer having any money to give to cultural outlets, but if you have the means, ...

With Dontrelle Willis starting for the Tigers for the first time since June, tonight had something of a "must-see" feel to it.  Well, maybe that's overstating it a bit.  But at the very least, there was much curiosity.  Unfortunately, everyone who tuned in for the game was reminded of just how maddening this failed season has been. For the second night in a row, Kyle Farnsworth played the role of gas can, taking a seemingly winnable game and setting it ablaze.  The first three batters he faced reached base, two of whom would have scored if not for a bad, "go, stop, go!" decision by future Tigers manager Rangers third base coach Matt Walbeck that got Travis Metcalf thrown out at home.  Even after getting that break, Farnsworth continued to pitch batting practice, putting four of the next five batters on base, and allowing three of those runners to score - with two outs.  The total damage?  Four runs, four hits, and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning. So over his last two appearances, The Farns has allowed six runs and six hits in just one combined inning of work.  To try and be fair, I'll point out that he didn't allow a run in his previous seven outings before Sunday night.  But Farnsworth has performed so badly since coming to the Tigers that you almost have to wonder if he's tanking it.  (Here's a deceiving stat for you: Farnsworth's ERA with the Tigers is 4.80.)  If he doesn't want to be with the Tigers, he probably d ...

Eastern Connecticut seems to have a hold on three generations of sports stars sticking around. South of Norwich, it’s Satti, for example. In the Norwich area, it’s the Carignan/Dugas line. North of Norwich is Derosier in Killingly or Bates in Putnam. Perhaps it goes with the old New England moniker — the land of steady habits. People stick around and don’t go far. Such is the case at Fitch High School, where lineman Mike Farnsworth is a third generation player for the Falcons, following in the footsteps of his father, Mark, and grandfather, Rupert. Mike’s brother, Eric, also played. It makes Mike a better player “because he has a sense of the history,” said Mike Emery, Fitch’s ‘new’ coach who returned after a five-year hiatus from the sidelines. Ironically, Mark Farnsworth was a member of Emery’s coaching staff the first time around in the 1990s. “My brother recently had a back injury in college, so he’s been telling me ‘I wish I could come back,’ ” Mike said. Farnsworth also said he didn’t start football until he was a freshman. “I just don’t like to fail,” he said. No matter who the coach, Fitch has long had a bunch of bruisers in the trenches, blocking for guys such as Mark Hall, Matt Maddox and John McCoy. Farnsworth, all 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds of him, is another example of a big, savvy guy who can be counted on. “We have high expectations for him. I think he’s going to be one of the better kids in the area at his positions,” ...

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s famous modern masterpiece, the Farnsworth House, fell prey to Mother Nature Sunday, September 14, as flood waters rose almost two feet over the top deck, entering the house. Built within the flood plain of the Fox River in Plano, Illinois, the house stands on columns five fee above ground which proved not high enough as record breaking rain amounts brought the river more than 14 feet above its normal level. The house will be closed for tours until further notice. Landmarks Illinois asks the public to please visit www.FarnsworthHouse.org for more information and make a donation today to help support this massive effort to restore an architectural icon. The Farnsworth House , built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1951, is one of the most famous examples of modernist domestic architecture and was considered unprecedented in its day. Landmarks Illinois and The National Trust for Historic Preservation saved the house in 2003 by purchasing it for $7.5 million at an auction in New York City. Today, the house is part of the National Trust’s collection of 29 historic homes, and is operated by Landmarks Illinois as a house museum. ...
