Welcome to Day 1 of our Road Trip. My seminar is over and it is time to begin the two-week "mrbrown Road Trip of the East Coast". Ryan joined me in Washington DC last night and we picked up our Toyota Prius hybrid car at Reagan Airport, kindly sponsored by Hertz . We plan to drive our eco-friendly vehicle along the East Coast for the next two weeks and ride our folding Dahon bikes to explore cities like Washington DC, Philidelphia and New York City. We cycled around this sunny Sunday morning and had a lovely breakfast at Bagels Etc, a small little place opposite Hotel Palomar, where we will be staying for DC leg. Our stay in DC is sponsored kindly by Hotel Palomar, Arlington and Zuji Singapore . For US$3.99 at Bagels Etc, we got a breakfast of coffee, orange juice, and a bagel with scrambled eggs and sausage. Super worth it, man. I ordered 2 pancakes and a sausage for only a little more than US$4.50. I couldn't even finish my second pancake and had to give it to Ryan. Stay tuned as we send you video and photo updates for these two weeks. Watch for details of the contest too. Ryan and I stumbled on this Sunday's Farmer's Market at Dupont Circle, and also met a nice dude selling Obama stickers (hi Reginald!) who gave us some nice tips about where to ride our bikes at the East Coast. It looks like we will drive up to New England on his advice. We are kinda going with the flow here, for our trip. It is nice to travel without any major iti ...

A couple weeks back we attended the Green City Market Farmer's dinner at Goose Island's Clybourn brewpub. That was the one that featured dishes from a host of chefs including Dean Zanella of 312 Chicago; Brian Huston of Paul Kahan's the Publican (opening in mid-autumn); Elissa Narow of Custom House and Paul Virant of Vie in Western Springs. Virant's dish was easily the most ambitious of the courses, utilizing lamb in unexpected ways. Virant sourced the lamb from Mint Creek Farm in downstate Stelle. Mint Creek Farm is a regular presence at Green City and other local markets. Owners Harry and Gwen Carr were seated at our table; Harry Carr took the time to explain how he rotates planting the grass and legumes on which his flock feed. Through the study of biodynamic agriculture and asking the right questions of their neighbors, the Carrs learned that planting perennial grasses and legumes, rotating their livestock's grazing habits and where they graze improves the health of the lambs, grass and soil. Over the years their farmland has increased from 50 acres to over 220. We remembered that we still had some lamb burger patties in the freezer from an earlier visit to Green City and thawed them out for Labor Day grilling. The 1/4-pound grass-fed lamb meat has a sweeter flavor and smoother texture than mass-produced livestock. We served them with toasted buns atop some Swiss chard with vine-ripened tomatoes, homemade honey mustard and Col ...

You weren't happy with your close proximity to downtown, the Medical Center and the Museum District; your tree-lined streets and quaint houses; your dining options that run the gamut from upscale (Hugo's, Indika, Feast, Da Marco) to down-home (Baba Yega, Cafe Montrose, Ziggy's, Lankford Grocery); your endless thrift stores and antique shops and clothing boutiques; your quirky coffee shops and bars. It just wasn't enough, was it, Montrose? Now you want your own Farmer's Market, too? Fine, be like that. You're finally getting your way: the first ever Montrose Farmer's Market is slated to be held in the parking lot of La Strada this Saturday, September 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Currently, the Farmer's Market will be held here every Saturday for the rest of the year, and hopefully for many years thereafter. According to a press release, the owner of La Strada , Aldo Catania, sees the Market as a point of pride and a way of giving back: "Hosting the Farmer's Market is our little contribution to the Montrose community." Confirmed vendors at the Montrose Farmer's Market include produce stands with local fruits and vegetables, specialty dessert items, homemade breads and pastas from La Strada, freshly-made soups, Sage Salads, an assortment of goodies like lotions, candles and soaps, and an intriguing-sounding vegan chili purveyor. As other spots fill up in the coming weeks, the Montrose Farmer's Market will be a strong member of the ...

The Ragley Historical Society has announced the temporarily suspension of the Farmers Market until further notice. Coordinators said the Market this summer was very successful with lots of vendors providing produce (both fresh & frozen), crafts, citrus trees, plants, fresh yard eggs, canned & baked goods, and beautiful and useful crafts. Some vendors may still have products to sell and interested persons may contact Dot who will get them in contact with the vendor. Anyone who did not have a booth at the spring & summer Market and wish to raise produce to sell this fall or next spring, have pot plants or trees, or hand made crafts, please contact Dot Fontenot at 725-6668 (home) or 884-6957 (cell). The pavilion may be rented for garage sales any weekend. Fontenot said residents also should mark calendars and begin making items for the Arts & Crafts Sale to be held Nov. 15, 2008 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Booth space under the pavilion is limited and will be assigned on a first come, first paid basis. Any number of booths may be set up outside the pavilion but vendors will need to furnish their own tents. Contact Fontenot to get an application. Anyone that had a booth last year will be sent an application, and those persons are reminded to return those applications as soon as they know that they want a booth. This sale will be well advertised. The Ragley Heritage & Timber Festival will be Saturday Oct. 18  from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.. ...
