Fareed Zakaria said today that we must have candidates for President and Vice President who know how to govern, who are capable of getting us through this financial crisis. He says we cannot have people who are "unqualified," who are merely "charismatic," who when pressed on the economy engage in "a vapid emptying out of every catchphrase about economics" that come into their head.He says such candidates should drop out. He is purporting to talk about Palin, but everything he says applies equally to Barack Obama.Obama is pitifully ignorant when it comes to the economy. He is better, I agree, than Palin at memorizing talking points, but then again, he's had a lot more practice. But he has no more intelligence, knowledge, insight, or ability than Palin does.Oh, and Zakaria -- who also likes to portray himself as something of an expert on foreign affairs -- also made light of Sarah Palin's experience with Russia. He says, "Two weeks ago I flew to Tokyo, crossing over the North Pole. Does that make me an expert on Santa Claus?" I don't know, Fareed, are you regularly briefed on military exercises involving Santa Claus? She never claimed to be an expert; she was asked about experience. She hinted at some of that experience, and it's not insignificant, and it's real. It's as real as any foreign experience Obama has: he had a summer vacation in Europe and met with some people. What Zakaria is doing is both ignoring the fact of her actual exper ...

Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, "to spend more time with her family"? (2 votes - 1 comment - 40 views) May 22, 2008. An hour with Fareed Zakaria, Editor of Newsweek International about his book The Post-American World. Zakaria argues that a "post-American" world order is beginning, in which the role of the United States of America will be diminished, but not irrelevant. Economic, diplomatic, and social power is rising in the rest of the world, a phenomenon he calls the "Rise of the Rest". Although the U.S. remains the supreme military power, the spread of capital, labor, innovation, ideas and information continues to bring down the level of influence the U.S. once had in world affairs. He states that the current worry for the U.S. is neither the rise of other countries, nor its diminishing influence, but the politics of stagnation and partisanship that have pervaded Washington over the past decades. Archaic systems of government that lend themselves to hijack by vested interests are stalling the adaptability and flexibility of the American nation, that was once the backbone of its unprecedented growth. CNN world affairs analyst Fareed Zakaria, in a column published in the October 6 issue of Newsweek, condescended towards Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, labeled her "utterly unqualified to be vice president," and complimented Katie Couric for her "smart question" to the Alaska governor in a recent interview. He later asserted clairvoyantly that " she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this is a hell of a time to start ." As a result of this slam, CNN host Wolf Blitzer interviewed Zakaria on Monday’s The Situation Room, in which the analyst referenced Tina Fey’s nearly word-for-word quotation of Palin from the Couric interview on last Saturday’s SNL program, which was played earlier in the program: "The scary answer was on the economy -- the one you displayed switching back and forth between Saturday Night Live, because it was absolutely clear, that she simply did not understand any of the issues involved. She did not understand the question." Zakaria, a naturalized American citizen who declared in May 2008 that "era of... ‘American exceptionalism’ is over," began his column in a snotty fashion. His title: "Palin is Ready? Please." His lead sentences stayed in this vein: "Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, ‘to spend more time with h ...

*Palin Is Ready? Please.* McCain says that he always puts country first. In this important case, that is simply not true. Fareed Zakaria NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Oct 6, 2008 Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, "to spend more time with her family"? Having stayed in purdah for weeks, she finally agreed to a third interview. CBS's Katie Couric questioned her in her trademark sympathetic style. It didn't help. When asked how living in the state closest to Russia gave her foreign-policy experience, Palin responded thus: "It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America. Where—where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to—to our state." There is, of course, the sheer absurdity of the premise. Two weeks ago I flew to Tokyo, crossing over the North Pole. Does that make me an expert on Santa Claus? (Thanks, Jon Stewart.) But even beyond that, read the rest of her response. "It is from Alaska that we send out those " What does this mean? This is not an isolated example. Palin has been given a set of talking ...

It's rather amazing the degree to which everyone the bottom has fallen out on Sarah Palin ever since her horrendous Katie Couric interview. People weren't too sure she had what it took before. Now they're convinced she's a buffoon. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, just eviscerates her in the latest Newsweek . It's an incredibly well-written, well-documented, and devastating piece of journalism. And it doesn't just indict Palin, it blasts McCain for risking the future of our country. Palin Is Ready? Please. Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, "to spend more time with her family"?... This is nonsense—a vapid emptying out of every catchphrase about economics that came into her head. Some commentators, like CNN's Campbell Brown, have argued that it's sexist to keep Sarah Palin under wraps, as if she were a delicate flower who might wilt under the bright lights of the modern media. But the more Palin talks, the more we see that it may not be sexism but common sense that's causing the McCain campaign to treat her like a time bomb. Can we now admit the obvious? Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president. She is a feisty, charismatic politician who has done some good things in Alaska. But she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this ...

Fareed Zakaria, Editor, Newsweek International was a featured speaker at Charles Schwab Institutional Impact 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Image via Wikipedia The Post American World Fareed Zakaria. 2008. ISBN 9780393062359. This could be a very important book, if the current crop of pres idential candidates ever read it. The author is a senior writer at Newsweekand the editor of Newsweek International. For those of us who watch the international stage this book is a telling indictment of how much GW bush has squandered what little remained of US good will internationally. Theauthor presents some hopeful ideas however of how this could be turned around, so that the the US, unlike Britain and its empire, does not undermine its own leadership position worldwide. His chapters on China and India are very insightful. It strikes me as a balanced, optimistic and well researched book, full of worldly details. He does ask that there be a sea change in US culture , to resist hunkering down and unilaterally forcing all other countries to the US position. Above all to be curious about the World, to listen to others, not pander to temporary political winds, resist fear, get its confidence back. Fort an academic style of book this was an easy almost to the point of engrossing read. You cannot help but learn a lot about the World, to counter Fox and CNN views. I urge you to read it. ...

With both party conventions behind us, we are now in the thick of the election year, the world around us crackling with dialogue, debate, and diatribe as the issues and headlines heat up. On those issues--particularly the future of our economy and the heady questions around America's rank and influence as a global power--there are few authors more knowledgeable or passionate than Thomas Friedman (his newest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America challenges us to lead the green revolution) and Fareed Zakaria, whose Post-American World poses salient questions about America's future that everybody wants to answer. In the spirit of the season, we invited Friedman and Zakaria to strike up a conversation, which we're pleased to share with you here exclusively. --Anne Fareed Zakaria : Your book is about two things, the climate crisis and also about an American crisis. Why do you link the two? Thomas Friedman : You're absolutely right--it is about two things. The book says, the world has a problem and America has a problem. The world's problem is that it's getting hot, flat and crowded and that convergence--that perfect storm--is driving a lot of negative trends. America's problem is that we've lost our way--we've lost our groove as a country. And the basic argument of the book is that we can solve our problem by taking the lead in solving the world's problem. Za ...
