BY ADAM RONIS I was the host of the Fantasy Baseball roundtable this week. The question is: What is the best way to handle trades? Should all trades be approved? A league vote? If you're running a league, what's the ideal way to approve trades without too much controversy? Andrew Cleary http://www.fantasybaseballgenerals.com : Ideally, I think trades would be automatically approved, and only subject to the commissioner's veto. Even though the best trades add to each team's strength, it's always possible that one team comes out better than the other (in fact, we all tend to try for this anyway). This is not an abomination. It is not unfair. It is an outcome to be expected in any game that features real human people playing against other human people (see also Major League Baseball). The flipside of this, of course, is that people get greedy, and trades that smack of collusion should be subject to veto, at the commissioner's discretion. Being the commissioner of a league takes responsibility and fairness, and it's appropriate that they should have the final say. That said, however, I think such an ideal system is more suited to older leagues where the players have known each other for some time, and especially in keeper leagues--there's less of an incentive to pull off a stinker of a trade if you know it can affect next year's team, and your relationship with the managers next year. If you're playing in a league with a lot of people ... Source: www.bostonherald.com --- 35 days ago

Baseball Boss, a free Web-based Baseball simulation game that combines Fantasy Baseball and virtual Baseball cards, is auctioning off a limited edition set of its 1957 Spire collection. The set, which includes many of that era's Baseball icons such as Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron, will be sold off one card at a time, with the auctions running today through Oct. 10 in the game's auction house. The virtual cards are being auctioned off individually but clustered by team in their reverse order of finish in 1957, and only one of each card will ever be made, the site says in a statement. The site's concept is pretty straightforward: create a Fantasy Baseball owner; open a starter pack of free virtual Baseball cards; use those cards to form a Fantasy Baseball team; and then challenge other players. ... With the NFL, and Fantasy football, kicking-off tonight, there is no better time to begin looking forward to the 2009 Fantasy Baseball season. The first thing I do is look at the data from the current season. Whose hitting HRs? Stealing bases? Hitting for AVG? Striking out batters? By getting a general sense of who is producing, I can begin to form some preliminary analysis of who the top players are going to be in the 2009 Fantasy Baseball drafts. And I am not excited. This season looks to have collapsed in terms of power. With just Ryan Howard of Philadelphia as the only "sure" thing for 40 HRs and a couple others fewer than six from the mark (Whie Sox OF Carlos Quentin and the Diamondbacks' Adam Dunn at 36 and 35 respectively), there isn't the clear cut delineation of production needed to easily rank the top players. Does this mean position scarcity takes a more prominent role? Maybe. Here is a Top 10 that does include scarcity more than one would normally see. At the top of the list is Florida Marlins' SS Hanley Ramirez. His across the board skills combined with his position make him an easy choice as the top-ranked player going into the Fantasy Baseball off-season. ARod is an easy choice at #2. After that? Let the debates begin! (Never mind the bottom portion of the Top 10.) 1. SS Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins 2. 3B Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees 3. 2B Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies 4. SS Jose Reyes, New Yo ... Source: www.faketeams.com --- 33 days ago
Coming into spring training this year, the Los Angeles Dodgers had 4 outfielders for 3 spots: the recently signed Andruw Jones, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and the overpaid Juan Pierre. Most Dodgers fans, including me, were adamant that the Dodgers outfield should be Ethier-Jones-Kemp. I voiced my opinion on numerous occasions here on Faketeams. But the fact that Joe Torre was 1) in his first year as Dodgers manager, and 2) loves veterans, it appeared that Pierre would be the starter, and Ethier and Kemp would battle for the 3rd outfield spot. But, Ethier settled the argument by having a much better spring training than Juan Pierre, and won the starting leftfield spot, with Jones and Kemp. Ethier had a solid April, but began to slump in May, continued to slump in June and started losing ABs to Pierre. Ether handled sitting on the bench with class saying all the right things and was a team player. But then he got hot again in July and has remained hot through August and the first week in September. He now leads the Dodgers in HRs after hitting his 20th last night in a rout of Dan Haren and the Diamondbacks 7-0. He went 5 for 5 last night with a HR and 5 RBIs. In September he is 11 for 15 with 2 HR and 6 RBIs. Since the All Star break he is hitting .310 with 9 HRs, 24 RBIs, slugging .613 with an OPS of .976. Ethier has solidified his spot in the Dodgers lineup this year, while Pierre has sat on the bench and complained to the press, somethi ... Source: www.draysbay.com --- 30 days ago
This is off the Rays topic. Sorry if it is inappropriate. I run a Tampa area rotisserie league and we are in search of an owner for the 2009 season. It is an NL only league with 11 current owners. We will be holding an expansion draft for the new owner, so that their team has a chance to be competitive. It is 5 X 5 with pretty standard rules. We have an in-person draft in late March. If you are interested please reply to rotodaddy@hotmail.com Once again sorry if I bothered anyone. I clearly marked it off-topic. Not trying to waste anybody's time. ... Stephen Drew was a highly touted prospect at the beginning of the 2007 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was touted as a power hitting SS with a good glove and was handed the everyday SS job coming out of spring training at the age of 24. In 2007, he hit .236-12-60-60. Not bad for his first full year, but more was expected of him, especially with an older brother, the backstabber (sorry) named J.D. In my NL only snake draft league, he was the 9th SS taken in the 7th round behind the following: Ramirez, Rollins, Reyes, Tejada, Furcal, Tulo, Greene and Theriot. In one of my keeper leagues, I traded him for Adam Wainwright. Drew answered all the naysayers in 2008, hitting .291-21-91-67. Only Hanley Ramirez and J.J. Hardy hit more HRs, and only Hardy and Jose Reyes had more RBI than Drew. Going into 2009, he could be the 4th SS off the board in NL only snake drafts depending on where Rafael Furcal signs in the offseason. I think he will end up with more HRs than any SS not named Hanley since he hits in a hitter friendly ballpark in Arizona. He also could easily lead all NL shortstops in RBI should Arizona find a legitimate leadoff hitter and drop him in their batting order. Where would you draft Drew amongst NL shortstops in 2009? ... The final weekend of first-round play is nearly in the books, so that makes this weekend important for teams looking to find an edge. With a light schedule yesterday, the weekend games take on more importance. With players coming back, and trying to balance the September call-ups, the decisions do get harder. We'll be around all weekend over email, and potentially some weekend posts to get Sunday's updates in as well. Be sure to send over your questions to elmhurstpubroundtable@yahoo.com . On to the notes! Scott Kazmir continues to dominate at home and pitch well against the Yankees. He went six solid innings last night. He gave up just one hit but walked five. Kazmir has these kind of days, where everything seems to be going well on the surface, but the control simply isn't there. This shouldn't concern Fantasy owners, the stats are great for the win. Another note: Dan Wheeler picked up the save. While Troy Percival is going to be given every opportunity to gain back the ninth-inning job, Wheeler quietly has recorded 11 saves and has been very effective in the role. Joe Maddon isn't one to mess around with what's working, so look for Wheeler to continue to see enough time in the role to give him Fantasy value. Jered Weaver is going to miss his start this weekend, which is why Dustin Moseley is getting the call for Anaheim. Weaver was cut while sitting on the bench in the Anaheim dugout. While there appears to be no need for stit ... Source: www.azsnakepit.com --- 30 days ago
