AP - Dan Quayle struck a nerve in 1992 when he went after the TV series "Murphy Brown" by saying its depiction of a single mother was irresponsible and set a bad example for America. The Republican vice president said the fictional character was "mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another `lifestyle choice.'" ...

Why was Bristol Palin not living at home and instead attending high school 43 miles away in Anchorage, where she was living with her aunt? The Washington Post reports today : Bristol Palin attended high school in Wasilla, where her mother grew up. But it was widely reported by town residents that while the Palins continued to live on Lucille Lake in Wasilla, she had moved to the home of an aunt in Anchorage and was attending high school there. And, later in the piece, there seems to be confirmation that the father, Levi, in question, is Levi Johnston of Wasilla: In Wasilla, a young woman who answered the door at the home of Levi Johnston said, "Any comment will have to come from the campaign." ...

You have to love the Republican platform. Do as I say, not as I do. Here is Palin, putting her Family on the T.V. screen to show what Big Family Values she has, and there sits her 17 year-old unwed pregnant daughter. Kinda like Cheney being a sword weilding, gay bashing, madman, while his daughter is in the next room munchin rug. You are all pathetic. ...

In response to the news that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant ("Unwed daughter pregnant, Palin says," Sept. 2), James Dobson of Focus on the Family says that the Palins should be commended for their "pro-life and pro-Family Values." ...

So is it politically relevant that Sarah Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughte r is pregnant ? How many ways can we dissect that question? Obama says it's off limits . The conservative Christian Family Research Council praises he r for not having an abortion and calls for more attention to abstinence. Ditto, basically, from Dr. James Dobson. And apparently everybody in their hometown of Wasilla knew about it. Hm. MSNBC says that Sarah Palin only supported abstinence-only sex ed during her run for governor. And the WSJ says it has the, no kidding, official McCain campaign talking points on the story. I have one question and one observation about how this might affect Ms. Palin's campaign: Did this come up during McCain's vetting process, I wonder? (Hmm. CNN Is reporting at this very instant that the answer is: Yes .) And I think it would matter a lot less if we -- the broad body politic --knew more about her. But this has suddenly become pretty much the second or third thing we now all know, behind Alaska governor, and mom of baby with Downs Syndrome. (And geez, there are no days off on this beat, are there?) ...

DMN Local columnist Jacqueline Floyd has a column that says: Even asking whether Sarah Palin has time for her frankly complicated Family and the vice presidency is unfair and sexist. A nugget: But all this arch talk about "shortchanging her Family" or "taking on too much" is obnoxious, insulting and genuinely discriminatory. Geez, I thought we settled this women-in-the-workplace debate a long time ago. Did I miss a memo? To which I say: With all due respect, whatever you think of the answer, Palin herself has made the question fair game by the way she is presenting herself to the voters. My argument at the jump. Here's the very first thing she said about herself in that marvelous speech at the GOP convention: "And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander-in-chief." Here's the second thing she said about herself: "I'm just one of many moms who will say an extra prayer each night for our sons and daughters going into harm's way." Here's the third thing: "To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message for you: For years, you've sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters. And I pledge to you that, if we're elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House." Followed by a several paragraphs of intro of her kids husband and parents. Here's either the fourth or fifth thing depending on how you read the speech ...

SANTA ROSA, Fla. | I agree with Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, that the unwed pregnancy of the governor's 17-year-old daughter is a Family matter and none of my business. So how do I even know about it? ...

How remarkable that many of those most excited about John McCain’s choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate seem even more enthusiastic since Monday’s revelation that her unwed 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Focus on the Family’s James Dobson, for example, praised the Family “for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-Family Values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.” Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council congratulated the Palins for “choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation.” Did they feel the same way about “Juno” or Jamie-Lynn Spears? Why should unplanned teen pregnancies reflect well on Family Values in some families but not others? At least the news could be expected to spotlight McCain’s record on reproductive issues beyond his opposition to abortion, including his votes not to fund teen-pregnancy prevention programs and not to require insurance companies that cover Viagra to also cover contraception. ...
