Should Wal-Mart Stores Inc. change its name, World-Mart Stores Inc. may be apropos since it holds the title of the world's largest retailer. The Bentonville, Ark., retailer has now set its eyes on more expansion for its kingdom with possible interest in Irish supermarket Superquinn. The one problem for Wal-Mart, however, is that Superquinn is not selling, just listening. "At no time have the owners of Superquinn put the business up for sale or contemplated doing so," Superquinn executive chairman Simon Burke told public broadcaster RTE. "If someone knocks on your door and says they'd really love to buy your house and would be prepared to pay you very generously, I think most of us would at least continue the conversation to find out how much they have in mind." Wal-Mart through its British unit Asda was reportedly one of six parties Tuesday that expressed interest for Superquinn. Along with Wal-Mart, Reuters points out that J Sainsbury plc, and Irish wholesalers Musgrave Group plc and BWG are also interested in Superquinn. For Wal-Mart, a possible bid for Superquinn is just part of its strategy of growing outside of its primary market in the U.S. Wal-Mart has received heavy resistance from opening in many towns and cities throughout the U.S. for fear of putting smaller neighborhood stores out of businesses.
