With 11 generations of his Family having ties to the county, Circuit Court Judge J. Overton Harris is modest when he talks about the History and influence of his ancestors. “I grew up right here in the community of the courthouse,” the judge said. “My grandfather’s store – at the intersection of 54 and 301 – was a regular country store. You could buy everything you needed there. You could even order a casket if you wanted one.” Harris said “I grew up working there.” His chores included pumping gas. A 1974 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, he received a B.A. in religious studies from the University of Virginia in 1979. After obtaining his bachelor’s, he went to work for Virginia’s Department of Corrections as a counselor and case worker. He was dealing with “emotionally disturbed boys” at the Hanover Learning Center. “That’s what motivated me to go back to school,” the judge said. “I enjoyed working with the boys, but I didn’t see much of a career path for me at the institution.” “I worked for awhile and went back to law school in 1982.” His law degree came in 1985 from the T.C.
