The test results are back and now JoAnn and Bob Rush know their Dog’s breed, or in this case, breeds. The Rushes recently took their two-year-old mixed-breed shelter pup, “Rosie,” to the Kewanee Veterinary Clinic, where she was the first Dog in Kewa-nee to have a new canine DNA test now available. “Rosie” was adopted from the Kewanee Animal Shelter when she was about three months old. She had been abandoned, was severely undernourished and weighed about 12 pounds when they took her home. They knew she had more than one breed in her Family tree, but had no way of telling what they were. Knowing a breed (or breeds) in a Dog’s makeup can help understand their behavior, and help determine diet and health needs, they decided to get the DNA test.. Dr. Dave Modder had heard of the DNA test for dogs but was not able to get it locally until a few weeks ago. The test is administered by a kit produced by Mars Veterinary called the Wisdom Panel MX mixed breed analysis. A blood sample is taken and sent away to be tested. Each sample is analyzed at more than 300 markers and compares the Dog’s genetic variations to an extensive database which can detect more than 130 American Kennel Club-recognized breeds.
