Sam White is a Maryland alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention, who will be blogging from Minneapolis-St. Paul for Maryland Moment. He is from Odenton in Anne Arundel County. I just left the delegation breakfast where we were greeted by a state legislator from Minnesota. She was very articulate and well-spoken as she talked about some different issues facing the people of her state as well as the nation as a whole. After she was done, we were briefed on the platform of the party as well as different rules of the convention. With all the hooplah surrounding conventions it is easy to miss the fact that this is a political process in which the party writes, amends and ratifies the platform that states the goals, wishes, and direction of the Republican Party. We also heard from our national committeewoman and man who really drove home to us ... Source: www.postchronicle.com --- 9 days ago

In the D.C. market, I've noticed that Comcast has a repetitive channel lineup.... For example, HBO HD appears twice in the lineup... 228 and 300 Movies on Demand 315 and 366 Showtime HD 238 and 339 HD on Demand 216 and 247 and 487 and 488 AMC appears on 53 and 138 Why does Comcast do this? At the very least they could reduce the "Compression" bonding of these HD Channels in the meantime, and not carry 2 streams of the same thing.... Goodness knows that anytime I try watching something on AMC HD, it's painful, with "slow motion" artifacts everywhere. In this case, it's pointless quantity by having two Showtime HD's, when I'd prefer quality for AMC HD. I also imagine that this duplicative lineup is keeping us from having new channels like FX HD, Bravo HD, or Fox News HD from the extra space that these duplicative channels take up? -- "We're going to start at one end of (Fallujah), and we're not going to stop until we get to the other. If there's anybody left when that happens, we're going to turn around and we're going to go back and finish it." Lt. Col. Pete Newell: 1st Inf. US Army ... Source: www.chron.com --- 39 days ago

Senator Patrick Leahy is concerned about the Pentagon's decision to designate an Army unit to Northern Command. On October 1, the Pentagon, for the first time ever, dedicated an Army force specifically to NorthCom, which is in charge of securing not some foreign region but the United States of America. The unit it assigned is the 3rd Infantry, First Brigade Combat Team, which has spent three of the last five years in Iraq. It was one of the first units to get to Baghdad, and it was active in retaking and patrolling Fallujah. One of its specialties is counterinsurgency. read more ... "The Forever War" by Dexter Filkins; Knopf ($23.95) Dexter Filkins' book "The Forever War," his account of the conflicts he covered as a reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan, is a kaleidoscope of images and intensity, bizarre encounters, electrifying vignettes, graphic depictions of mayhem and death - as well as fleeting moments of humanity in countries convulsed by violence. It is not a linear narrative. It is written in finely honed bursts of vibrant color that capture the peculiar culture of the war and echo the Vietnam classic "Dispatches" by Michael Herr. Martin Luther once said that our greatest sin is our greatest strength. This would be true of "The Forever War." Its very power is its weakness. It is a raw and riveting account of violence: the violence done by occupation forces to Iraqis, and the violence meted out in return. But it fails to examine the slow drip of repression, the tiny and huge indignities of occupation that push Iraqis to become human bombs or descend into the murky underworld of insurgent groups. Filkins begins by plunging us into the fighting in the assault on Fallujah by First Battalion, Eighth Marines. He works his way down deserted streets, ducking and scampering to avoid bursts of fire, and by the time he is done we have an intimate picture of the waste and brutality of industrial slaughter. This terse and dramatic opening sets the tone: This is an account of ceaseless and futile destruction. "Anythin ... Source: www.myrtlebeachonline.com --- 7 days ago
The attorneys for two Marines charged in the killing of unarmed Iraqi detainees accused prosecutors Friday of intimidation by delaying the court-martial of one to try forcing testimony from the other, who faces similar charges. Sgt. Ryan Weemer and another Marine, Sgt. Jermaine Nelson, face military charges of unpremeditated murder and dereliction of duty in the death of a detainee during combat in Fallujah. A military judge this week granted a prosecution request to postpone Weemer's court-martial. Weemer and Nelson have repeatedly refused to testify against each other, as well as against a former squad leader, Jose Nazario, who was acquitted in August in federal court of charges related to the killings on Nov. 9, 2004. ...
