Although Minnesota Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty is not beloved by all in the Gopher State, he has maintained a consistent level of job approval throughout his gubernatorial tenure. In nearly 60 public opinion Polls of Minnesotans conducted since early 2003, Pawlenty has dipped below the 50 percent mark in job approval in less than 10 of them. Pawlenty enjoyed some of the best marks of his career in 2007, when his most notable actions included a firm stance against the DFL on tax issues in the state. Overall, across more than a dozen Polls that year, Pawlenty had an average job approval rating of 56 percent, with just a 40 percent average disapproval rating. This +16 net rating is very impressive for a governor who never received a majority of the vote in either of his two successful gubernatorial campaigns. However, as Pawlenty has become part of the constant chatter of possible vice-presidential running mates to John McCain, his ratings have taken a bit of a hit: Pawlenty’s disapproval numbers have averaged 45 percent this year, and his approval numbers have fallen a bit to 53 percent. His net approval rating has been cut in half to +8. By another measure, Rasmussen has also measured Pawlenty’s rankings as higher in Polls conducted at the end of 2007 (50 percent “excellent” + “good” versus 49 percent “Fair” + “poor”) than compared to those conducted in 2008 (46 percent “excellent” + “good” versus 54 percent “Fair” + “poor”) – a 9- ...

Mayor Bloomberg is sending several messages with his endorsement of three Democrats today. First, it's a safe bet his selections are designed more to make a statement than to sway Democratic primary voters who probably don't put much stock in the candidates a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent backs (unless that support turns into cash and helps shape their respective messages). NOTE: A reader just pointed out that Bloomberg Polls very high among Democrats, to which I replied that he has enjoyed a high approval rating across the political spectrum for some time now, but that somehow hasn't translated into votes for the candidates he has endorsed in the past - although, to be Fair, they weren't Democratic Senate candidates. This is also probably not about Bloomberg's desire to run for governor in 2010 (something he has insisted he won't do) as he isn't winning friends or currying favor among the establishment with these picks. It is, however, clear that Bloomberg, like so many others these days, is hedging his bets when it comes to the question of who will win the battle for control of the Senate. While he has pledged to keep supporting the Senate Republicans, recently sending them a check for $500,000, Bloomberg is also making it clear his oft-repeated mantra of supporting those who support the city has nothing to do with party affiliation . "It's clear these endorsements were about votes on particular issues: Mayoral ...

It's that slow-news time of year, when PR firms try to promote clients by releasing pointless Polls to a gullible media. Seems Fair, so here's a couple. First up, as it were, is dating site gay-PARSHIP.co.uk ; decathlete Daley Thompson tops their poll of British Olympians gay men would most like to date, with a resounding 33 per cent of the votes (must be the moustache). Sir Steve Redgrave is not far behind, on 28 per cent. Dame Kelly Holmes wins the lesbian poll with a landslide 48 per cent, Denise Lewis trailing in second with 19 per cent. Sir Steve does come top of BA's Top Five Olympic British Competitors poll, though. In other news: BA come 18th in customer satisfaction poll by 'Which?' magazine. ...

What's going on at the Associated Press? First, it publishes an article about how the McCain campaign feels the New York Times editors are like a blogger " sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of Dungeons & Dragons ." Then, a few hours later, it publishes a piece about presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama being afraid to debate McCain in a town hall format. Honestly, with Fair and balanced coverage like this from America's leading wire service, who needs Fox News? (emphasis added throughout, photo courtesy Weekly Standard): Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain's challenge for a series of joint appearance s, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall. In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, "I think that's a great idea." In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events. Obama's reversal on town hall debates is part of a play-it-safe strategy he's adopted since claiming the nomination and grabbing a lead in national Polls. Advisers to the Illinois senator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss strategy, say Obama is reluctant to take chances or give McCain a high-profile stage now that Obama's the front-runner . For those un ...

clipped by: debbyski Clip Source: www.nytimes.com Bush is hobbling out of office, the economy is in the toilet, voters are sick of the war and the party’s wunderkind candidate is raking in money hand over fist. So why is the presidential race a statistical dead heat? The pundits have offered a host of reasons, but one in particular deserves more exploration: racism. As Obama gently put it in his race speech , today’s racial “resentments aren’t always expressed in polite company.” However, they can be — and possibly will be — expressed in the privacy of the voting booth. Some might say that turnabout is Fair play, citing the fact that 89 percent of blacks say they plan to vote for Obama. That level of support represents a racial advantage for him, too, right? Not necessarily. Blacks overwhelmingly vote Democratic in the general election anyway. According to CNN exit Polls John Kerry got 88 percent of the black vote in 2004. Think racism isn’t a major factor in this election? Think again. ...

As most of you know, I am a very big Obama supporter. This does not, however, make me a "kool-aid drinking Obamanut cultist," much as some would like to label me as such. I have not been without my Fair share of criticism against Obama when it has been warranted. But recently, I have found very little at all for which I could find criticism for him. His overseas trip went beautifully and he has been consistently and brilliantly responding to the McCain campaign and their baseless, negative attacks. So, what is Obama doing wrong? Or rather, what is McCain doing right? Even having to ask this question is worrying to me, but I cannot help but ask it right now. Despite the fact that conventional wisdom would dictate that McCain's campaign is in shambles and getting desperate, the numbers are not reflecting the same. Polls have been showing an ever-closing gap between the two candidates. Ok, I can brush that aside. I don't put a lot of faith in Polls. But what does worry me is when I see an ever-closing gap on the Intrade Prediction Markets. I have studied Prediction Markets excessively and almost obsessively at times since the beginning of the Primary, and it worries me to see Obama's numbers dropping and McCain's rising. For the first time since Obama clinched the nomination, he has dropped below 60%. What's going on here? I certainly cannot see anything particularly wrong with what Obama has been doing. I am thus forced to believe that Mc ...

It was another fairly bad polling day for Barack Obama, and we are getting to the point where it would be hard to describe the election as anything other than "too close to call". But most of that has been driven by the rapidly tightening national numbers . This set of state polling isn't quite as bad as it looks for Obama: The most disappointing for result for Obama is probably in Indiana, where SurveyUSA has John McCain pulling into a 6-point lead after having trailed by a single point last month. Why so disappointing? Because Obama has been investing heavily in Indiana while McCain has not. A couple of caveats, though. Firstly, investments in the ground game may not show up in the Polls in the first place. And secondly, the partisan leaning of the sample has shifted a Fair bit more Republican than the last edition of this poll. It's possible that, as McCain enthusiasm grows (and Bush fatigue wanes ), more Republican-leaning independents are now willing to identify themselves as Republican. It's also possible that we're just looking at some static. It is officially time for Obama to be worried in Minnesota , where SurveyUSA marks the third consecutive poll to show him with a lead of only 2-4 points? Our model says ... maybe not qute yet. There has certainly been a pretty big shift in the raw numbers in the Gopher State, but there aren't really any demographic explanations for it -- Obama hasn't lost much ground in demographical ...
