On one day in August, we lost Stephanie Tubbs Jones, 58, member of the House of Representatives from Ohio since 1999 from a cerebral hemorrhage and Gene Upshaw, 63, a star offensive guard with the Oakland Raiders who became the executive director of National Football League Players Association from pancreatic cancer. On back-to back-days in August comic Bernie Mack and singer-songwriter and composer Isaac Hayes joined the ancestors. Fort Lauderdale environmentalist and black community activist Leola McKoy passed away in August. August was a cruel month. The year has been harsh in its taking of black souls. That is why it is so important to stay on top of your health. Go to the doctor before you see blood or feel pain, Fort Lauderdale doctor Edwin Hamilton always advises. His annual health Fair is this weekend and there are free screenings for several ailments that affect black people. Waiting to go to the emergency room, the most expensive care you can get, should not be an option. Get regular check ups. Buy health insurance if at all possible. Negoatiate and barter if you have to but get yourself a doctor now. When was the last time you visited your doctor? Holla back. ... Source: marcambinder.theatlantic.com --- 14 days ago
House Democrats who voted against the bailout are throwing a new bill into the mix. A diverse lot of lawmakers led by Rep. Pete DeFazio want to give the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. more latitude to deal with bank failures, just as the FDIC efficiently negotiated the takeovers of Washington Mutual and Wachovia. It would also suspend "Fair value accounting," which could, in theory, stabilize prices and impose a securities tax equal to one fourth of one percent of profits. The ideas were first introduced by former FDIC chairman William M. Isaac in Friday's Washington Post. Cosponsors of the legislation include Rep. Rush Holt, Rep. Donna Edwards, Rep. Mazie Hirono, Rep. Marcy Captur and Rep. Elijah Cummings. Among those making calls on the bill's behalf will be Andrew Stern, president of the country's largest and most powerful labor union, the SEIU. And OpenLeft, a key liberal activist site, is already whipping support for it. ... Source: www.star-telegram.com --- 12 days ago
By Teresa McUsic If nothing else, the recent credit crunch means one thing to all consumers: Credit scores are more important than ever. For a lot of Texans, the three-digit number that grades your credit report could be a problem. Collectively, Texans have held the lowest credit score in the nation at 670 for several years, according to Experian, the Tyler-based credit bureau. While 670 isn’t a bad score, (scores range from 350 to 850), this average means half of us have lower scores than that threshold. Not a great number when you consider 24 states have collective credit scores above 700. The lower your credit scores, the higher you are as a risk to lenders, and that means you have to pay higher interest rates for everything from credit cards to home and auto loans. Or if your score is low enough, you may be denied credit completely. A chart at Fair Isaac’s consumer page, www.myfico.com , shows just how much those lower scores cost consumers. A Texas homebuyer with a credit score of 500 would pay a 10.22 percent annual percentage rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage, almost double what a homebuyer with a credit score of 760 would pay. The same is true for an auto loan. On a 36-month auto loan, that high-risk Texas consumer would pay 15.16 percent APR, while a consumer on the other end of the spectrum would pay just 6 percent, Fair Isaac calculates. Credit card companies also use the scores, said Curtis Arnold, founder of CardRatin ... Source: connect.educause.edu --- 7 days ago

Two teenagers escaped with only minor injuries Sunday afternoon after rolling a vehicle several times in a bean field about a mile south of Brimfield. A 15-year-old girl driving on a learner's permit was headed east on Shissler Road when just after 3 p.m. she apparently drifted into the oncoming lane and then overcorrected, losing control of the car. The car then swerved off the road and flipped several times in a bean field about a half mile west of Brimfield Road. The driver, whose identity was not released Sunday, and her 18-year-old passenger, Isaac Apodaca of the Brimfield area, were both wearing their seat belts and were standing outside the vehicle when passersby, including a nurse, stopped to assist, according to authorities. The driver and Apodaca were taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria with nonlife-threatening injuries, said Peoria County Sheriff's Lt. Jim Pearson. Apodaca was listed in Fair condition there Sunday night. The car sustained major damage and had all three airbags deploy, Pearson said, adding after surveying the damage, he felt the two were lucky to be alive. "You can't even recognize it as a car," Pearson said. ... Source: thestate.com --- 34 days ago

Leasing And Your Credit Score Your credit score is part of the leasing decision. When you apply for a lease, your lease company will typically look at your credit score to decide whether you to approve the application. The leasing contract stipulates that you make regular, monthly payments over your lease term. The credit score you lease company requests identifies how likely you are to make such payments. It is simply a number calculated according to a model that takes into account your payment history, any amounts you owe and credit currently in use. Leasing and your credit score It is very important to keep a good credit-score, usually above 700, to qualify for a lease or any other lending decision. Start by ordering your credit report from Fair Isaac Corp, the company that creates your credit score. If erroneous data is held about you, then contact the creditor responsible and get such information corrected. Your payment history is the single most important factor in determining your credit score, so get in the habit of paying everything you owe on time and keep the balances low in your credit cards. Ever wanted to terminate your lease early, comfortable with the thought you werent going to be hit with hefty fees? You can if you transfer your lease to someone else. Trading a lease is the best option for people who want to terminate a lease early and dont want to pay the large termination imposed by most lease agents. It can also b ...
