Facebook and MySpace recently redesigned their sites, but Forrester's Web Site Review methodology still uncovered major usability flaws on both. Of the 10 criteria we examined, Facebook passed four and MySpace passed only three. The sites shared some common problems like inefficient task flows, illegible text, and scarce security policies. But the experiences weren't all bad. Facebook gave key content prominence on its home page and helped users find new contacts. MySpace provided a flexible way to search its site. Customer experience professionals at these and other sites should get the most out of their site redesigns by evaluating their experiences, attacking problems with known solutions, and designing for the unique needs of younger users. ...

While the number of Facebook users that have signed up to protest the social net's Redesign represents only a fraction its 100 million members, the movement continues to gain attention. Over the past few months, dozens of groups have popped up on Facebook to voice displeasure at the changes. As USAT notes , one group has attracted 1 million members. The changes include separating members' profile info into different areas of the site. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that he's seen this kind of thing before—such as when the site first introduced the "news feed" feature two years ago. And it doesn't appear as though the protests are going to lead to any mass defections. But one change that did quickly blow up in the social net's face was last year's Project Beacon ad program. A number of reports in the past week indicate that Facebook might be reviving Beacon. In a post on his blog, Stay N Alive (via Mashable ), developer Jesse Stay says that while Project Beacon never really went away, Facebook may be readying it for a bigger comeback. Beacon, which shared details about member purchases as part of the news feed, stopped accepting new marketers last fall after an outcry from users and privacy advocates. Stay relates a message he saw in a Facebook developer forum about another member's experience signing up for CBSSports.com's Free Fantasy Football feature. A popup announcing the developer had signed up for the game appeared o ...

Will Facebook users like the site’s new Redesign? The company made a big bet by re-orienting users to feeds of information. The new version is already available as an opt-in option, and it’s slated to fully replace the old version later this fall. Today, web analytics firm Compete has crunched its own data, and the [...] ...

SO, ONLY MOMENTS AFTER I finally tried out the new Facebook yesterday, I came across this item on Gawker (via siblog Valleywag): “700,000 Facebook users join ‘I hate the new Facebook’ page.” And all I could think is, all of those magazines that have gone through redesigns over the years are lucky they [...] ...

The new Facebook design goes live, what, this week or next, and plenty of kids—you know, the original demographic before the site was overrun by social media wonks—are none too pleased. Ignore the haters -- Facebook's new look is going over just fine. That was the message from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who was interviewed by BusinessWeek editor Steve Adler at the American Magazine Conference. Sandberg acknowledged that the social networking site has roused some users' ire with its recent Redesign . The upside, she said, is most of them are venting their anger right on Facebook. "People are using our product to protest our product," he said. "That's good. The fifth most popular group on Facebook right now is protesting the Facebook Redesign. And I do see the humor in that." She compared the backlash to the one that occurred upon the introduction of Facebook's Newsfeed feature . "We're optimistic that people are going to get used to it and like it as they did with Newsfeed," she said. "Newsfeed is probably the single most important thing that's made Facebook work." "Joking aside, it's going quite well," she added. "We're actually quite pleased with it. The real thing we want to look for is if usage falling off, and we're not seeing that at all." The Facebook Redesign has been almost as unpopular as the US financial bailout, with an estimated 70% of users disagreeing with the changes. What Mark Zuckerberg giveth, he taketh away. When Facebook launched F8, its developer platform in May 2007, the announcement met with near universal praise. Nick O'Neil of AllFacebook.com recently posted a blog entry entitled The Future of Widgets on Facebook: Dead where he wrote As a joke I created the Bush Countdown Clock when the platform launched and amazingly I attracted close to 50,000 users. While the application was nothing more than a simple flash badge, it helped a lot of people express themselves. Expression is not Facebook’s purpose though, sharing is. Widgets or badges that help users express their personal beliefs, ideals, and personality are now harder to find with the new design. Thanks to the Redesign all the badges which were “cluttering” the profile have been moved to a “Boxes” tab which most people don’t visit apparently. When the new profile was first rolled out, the traffic to my application actually jumped a little but oddly enough on September 11th, things took a turn for the worse. I’m not sure what happened but my guess is that a lot of the profiles started to get shifted over. ... It’s clear though that widgets have not survived the shift over and my guess is that within a matter of weeks we will see most top-performing widget applications practically disappear. This is one aspect of the Facebook Redesign that I didn't consider in my original post on What You Can Learn from the Facebook Redesign . Although moving the various applications which are basically badges for self expression like Bumper Sticker does reduce page load times, by relegating them to an ...

Facebook developers have been quivering since the site first announced its Redesign: Their worry was that the changes, which are supposed to clean up the site and make it easier to use, would not coincidentally torch traffic to their apps. The new design cuts down on the ability for apps to go 'viral' super fast, and knocks out tried and true -- if somewhat shady -- tactics to build short-term traffic. Anecdotally, we hear that developers' fears have been justified: Some of them are seeing a huge dropoff in traffic. And apps that have no real purpose except to sit on your profile are being hit especially hard . But that doesn't mean that all developers are getting hurt. Some of them tell us that they've seen the opposite since the Redesign kicked in, and have seen "hockey stick' growth in the last month or so. Some examples: Bevy : A women's fashion app that allows people to browse through catalogues of various clothing stores. The app launched in May, but since mid August, the app has taken off - going from about 4,000 monthly active users to almost 41,000. Street Football : A soccer game developed by IBTGames.com. The app launched in late August, but it's grown to 41,000 monthly active users in just about a month. Impressive because the conventional wisdom about the Redesign was that starting a new app was going to be tougher under the new conditions. Watercooler : Watercooler makes sports and TV entertainment apps, and while t ...
