Jimmy Wales is opening up the Wikia Search engine to anyone who wants their own data or application to show up in results. Called Wikia Intelligent Search Extensions (WISE), it lets developers create search results based on certain keywords or rules. Wales tells me: It is like Facebook Apps for search results. Wikia Search is launching the WISE framework with a bunch of partners: Digg (returns recent frontpage headlines as results), Indeed (for job search), Kayak (for travel searches), Last.fm (for music searches), and even Twitter (relevant Tweets). The other partners at launch will be AccuEather, AcronymFinder, Amie Street, Creative Commons (CC images), PleaseDressMe (T-shirt results) Thomson Reuters, Snooth (wine), and Yelp (local reviews). Partners can customize results not just for keywords, but create their own search Apps. (Kayak's, for instance, let's you enter departing and returning dates when you search for a flight). So like Yahoo BOSS and Search Monkey , WISE lets developers change both the result ranking and the look and feel of customized results. In fact, anything that can be written in HTML can turn up as a result. ...

According to a blog post on Mashable, Facebook applications are now portable to Friendster’s developer platform. Remember Friendster? Sure, it’s no longer big in the U.S., but apparently it’s massive in Asia, with over 60 million users around that part of the globe. Since there is reportedly little overlap in Asia between Friendster and Facebook, [...] ...

In the latest of many attempts by a wide variety of players to improve search results beyond Google's iconic 10 blue links, the community information service Wikia Inc. on Oct. 8 is launching what cofounder Jimmy Wales informally calls "Facebook Apps for search." Officially dubbed WISEApps, for Wikia Intelligent Search Extensions , the platform is a way for both individuals and businesses to create new kinds of search results for a particular keyword. Wales, who also cofounded the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia , launched Wikia Search last January as a project to create an open-source search engine. How would WISEApps work? The Washington Post WISEApp, for instance, lets people who type in "Barack Obama" or "John McCain" get Post news stories directly on the Wikia Search results page. Or if you search "JFK to LAX," the travel search service Kayak.com will provide a small search box near the top of the results that show a list of fares between New York City and Los Angeles. Other Web publisher partners include AccuWeather.com, the user-driven news aggregation site Digg, and news service Thomson Reuters, among others. Initially, the publishing partners will be supplying dozens or even hundreds or thousands of keywords and keyword strings for which they'd like to serve their customized results. Those will appear at the top of the results page at first, though Wikia Search users will be able to vote them down the page over time if ...

A key part of Facebook's focus for the future is to keep pace with its users' increasing desire to share personal information, said Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, speaking at the Future of Web Apps conference in London. "When we first started, people were relatively less comfortable sharing a lot of information. Early on there were a lot of questions, like 'should I put my full name on Facebook?' and 'should I put my mobile phone number on Facebook?', and a lot of what got people over that hump were privacy controls so they were sharing that information with just the people they wanted," said Zuckerberg in an on-stage chat with conference host and organiser Ryan Carson. "When there was only a little information that people could post, people would update their profile maybe once a month or every couple of months. Then we added things like photos and groups and the updates became more regular like once a week, once every couple of days, and now with status updates and all the different applications that people are using, the rate is increasing so much. Now most people probably update stuff on a daily basis." Zuckerberg believes sharing is growing exponentially: "One of the things that we have thought about at Facebook - we don't have any conclusions on it yet - but an interesting historical analogy is Moore's Law." (The Law stated that the speed of processors would double every two years.) "And I wouldn't be surprised, ...

Last week I launched the second major iteration of Facebook's iPhone app , which finally lives up to our users' expectations and delivers most of the features they wanted. Getting here has been really challenging, and I'm finally at a point where I can reflect back on the experience and try to share what I've learned. The 1.0 version of the app was trashed in reviews for its lack of features, which was really hard for me to take given how hard I worked on it. People must have assumed that all I had to do was plug Facebook's data into Apple's ready-to-use UI components and hit the GO button. I wish it had been that easy, but unfortunately many of the components I needed were missing from the iPhone SDK, even though they existed in Apple's own Apps. The lack of a mail composer and a photo browser were particularly disappointing. I had to make a choice: I could dash off weak versions of these components and hope Apple adds the full versions to the SDK later, or I could attempt to replicate them in great enough detail to convince users they were using a standard interface. I chose to take the latter path, and it definitely cost me a lot of development time which could have been used to add more features. One other side effect was that users actually did think they were using a standard interface built by Apple, and so they gave me no love for the work I did, and instead insulted me for not taking the time to deliver more features. In ret ...

Section: Video , Communications , Cellphones , Smartphones , Web , Web 2.0 Looking for an easy way to share video of what’s happening right now, but only have a BlackBerry with you?  Next2Friends is trying to help out with that by releasing the “First Live Mobile Streaming Video for BlackBerry Devices.” The Apps will work on the BlackBerry Curve and Pearl models, and allow you to stream live video over the Internet.  It also allows for the videos to easily be shared via social networking sites like Facebook, blogs, or any other sort of website. The applications are also available for Symbian S60 and S40 devices, as well as Windows Mobile 6.  This is the first time this suite of applications is available for BlackBerry, and Next2Friends is currently working on extending the applications to work on “a number of other popular operating systems,” which would presumably (or at least hopefully) include Android and iPhone. Next2Friends promises that advanced compression techniques used for shared content will cause no problems with degradation or delays with the images or videos, even though they are transmitted at a size smaller than the original.  That is fairly believable, given that most videos on the site look like average YouTube videos and the fact that the cameras on most cellphones aren’t all that amazing.  The “Mobile Social Suite” also includes applications for “media rich opinion polling,” simple picture uploading, and an ap ...
