narramissic writes "Back in January, a team of researchers uploaded a malicious program to Facebook to demonstrate the possible dangers of social networking applications. Called 'Photo of the Day,' the App serves up a new National Geographic photo daily, but every time it's clicked it sends a 600 K-byte HTTP request for images to a victim's Web site. Photo of the Day is still listed on Facebook, with its authorship attributed to Andreas Makridakis, one of the researchers. The application has 514 active users now, with several comments praising it. The study was published by the Foundation for Research and Technology in Heraklion, Greece, and the Institute for Infocomm Research in Singapore." Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

The move effectively enables Fbook App developers to port their apps to Friendster and to choose between Fbook and *Google's* OpenSocial APIs when launching apps on Fbook. Last year , Friendster launched its developer platform with over 180 apps and allowed participating companies and developers to advertise anywhere in the App space and keep all of the revenue. It closed a $20 million round and hired a new CEO, Richard Kimber, in August. Facebook has lived up to its promise to replace its old iPhone App -- which didn't let users do much more than read their feeds -- with a fully functioning application by the end of September. The new Facebook application is truly excellent. Not only does it let you do pretty much anything you can do on a regular computer, it makes it all easy and elegant. Now that they have brought this mobile App up to speed with the desktop version, I'm really hoping that Facebook will take the next step and add special features to the mobile application that take advantage of location-sensing technology. ...

Researchers successfully created a zombie botnet out of Facebook users that install a rogue application. They created an App called “Photo of the Day” and it ostensibly showed a new photo from National Geographic each day on the user’s Facebook page. Follow the jump to see what the App actually did to create a denial of service attack. Facebook downplayed it of course but their reasoning seems flawed to me. Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt disputes the economics of the attack. "As a practical matter, it is not that easy to get an application with millions of users," Schnitt said. "Why wouldn't you get venture capital or make money with ad rather than use it to take down a website?" Comments ...
