THIS STORY RAN IN THE PRINT EDITION OF THE KANSAN ON AUG, 12, 2008: The clock is ticking on the county commission. In less than 30 days, the commission must contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency to either ask for an extension to file or file a formal protest of proposed FLOOD plain map provisions. On Monday, the commission discussed filing an extension and filing a protest of the proposed maps. “We can’t get the adoption of new FLOOD plain maps stopped, but we can prolong this,” planning and zoning director Scott Davies said. “At some point, this will go to the planning and zoning commission.” But before that happens, the county will file a protest based on data collected by Garber Surveying. The company surveyed 100 miles of county road and found a number of errors in the information used to create the maps. It’s that information in which FEMA is most interested. “We have to have the technical information,” Davies told commissioners Monday. “The stories from grandpa and family histories, unfortunately, won’t fly with FEMA.” Davies told the commission his intention is to file for a 90-day extension and to collect protests from property owners for about the next two weeks before writing a formal protest of the proposed maps. “We need to let the public gather their information and bring it to us,” commissioner Chip Westfall said. “From there, we can protest this.” Davies said he had not set a deadline for landowners to bring pr ...
