The Christian Science Monitor - At the time, it was perhaps the biggest bailout in US history. Today, one month later, the federal takeover of mortgage giants FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac has been all but forgotten in the drama of the global credit crunch. ... Once, FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac seemed a relatively quiet backwater of politics and finance. Now the world echoes with the collapse of banks that stumbled into the American subprime lending mess, and any political connection to Freddie and FANNIE can be almost as toxic as their loan pools. ... I doubt it, seems like spin. 2001 April: The Administration's FY02 budget declares that the size of FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac is "a potential problem," because "financial trouble of a large GSE could cause strong repercussions in financial markets, affecting Federally insured entities and economic activity." Its a defense budget, odd way to fix the economy id say. 2002 May: The President calls for the disclosure and corporate governance principles contained in his 10-point plan for corporate responsibility to apply to FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac. (OMB Prompt Letter to OFHEO, 5/29/02) Rather a broad reading of this at best? 2004 February: The President's FY05 Budget again highlights the risk posed by the explosive growth of the GSEs and their low levels of required capital, and called for creation of a new, world-class regulator: "The Administration has determined that the safety and soundness regulators of the housing GSEs lack sufficient power and stature to meet their responsibilities, and therefore…should be replaced with a new strengthened regulator." (2005 Budget Analytic Perspectives, pg. 83) Page 83 THE BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2005 83 This Budget continues steps to improve the effectiveness of management actions by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service. Currently, about 17 percent of major fisheries stocks are known to be over-fished, and stock levels are unknown for another 38 percent. While more than 80 percent of the over- ... Slate has a good rundown of why FANNIE and Freddie are symptoms of the current financial meltdown, not the cause. To borrow from publius’ summation: essentially, “it’s not risky to lend to minority families, it’s risky to lend to rich white people.” Taste the snark: I await the Krauthammer column in which he points out the specific [...] ... Since the Democrats took control of the Congress, Democrat Barney Frank heads the House Financial Services Committee and Democrat Chris Dodd heads the Senate Banking Committee. They took lead roles in trying to get us out of the crises we are now experiencing. Why weren't they looking after the folks when FANNIE Mae was out of control back in 2005? ... The left is slowly beginning to wrap their heads around the fact that it was too mush government intervention in the market, not too little, that caused the current financial crisis. In an article at Slate defending government subsidization of subprime loans, Daniel Gross writes: Let’s be honest. FANNIE and Freddie, which didn’t make subprime loans but did buy subprime loans made by others, were part of the problem. … There was a culture of stupid, reckless lending, of which FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac and the subprime lenders were an integral part. But the dumb-lending virus originated in Greenwich, Conn., midtown Manhattan, and Southern California, not Eastchester, Brownsville, and Washington, D.C. Investment banks created a demand for subprime loans because they saw it as a new asset class that they could dominate. They made subprime loans for the same reason they made other loans: They could get paid for making the loans, for turning them into securities, and for trading them—frequently using borrowed capital. So Gross is finally willing to admit that FANNIE and Freddie were part of the problem, but still wants to lay the lion’s share of the blame on Wall Street greed. As if greed was invented yesterday. As John Steele Gordon documents in today’s Wall Street Journal , our country has a long history of financial break downs, do mostly to bad government regulations enacted to combat greedy bankers. Turning to today’s crisis he ... Source: tonygallegos.wordpress.com --- 1 day ago

In a bid to fix blame for the meltdown in financial markets, the lead House oversight panel this week launched into the bailout of insurance giant American International Group (AIG) - and the non-bailout of Lehman Brothers investment bank. Next week, it's the turn of high-flying hedge fund managers, once earning $1 billion a year, plus; then, the rating agencies who assured investors that all was well and the federal regulators who let it all happen. But conspicuous for their absence - at least before November elections - are former executives of mortgage giants FANNIE Mae and Freddie Mac, now in federal conservatorship. ...
