"We ought never to do wrong when people are looking." Mark Twain The loss experienced when a partner engages in a romantic affair is often described as a loss of resources, such as love, time, attention, sexual energy, and financial resources. The unfaithful person is described as transferring such resources from the spouse to the lover. There are here two empirical assumptions: (a) we have a given amount of mental (and sexual) energy, and (b) having an affair decreases the mental (and sexual) energy directed toward the spouse. It is not evident that these assumptions are always correct. Rosa, a single mother, based her initial opposition to Extramarital Affairs on the reason of scarce resource: "I believed that I only have a certain amount of time and energy for romance. So it is best spent with someone that is open to all the various possibilities of its development." After a while, however, Rosa did find the time and energy for such Affairs and twice was involved in Affairs with married men, claiming that "I love who I love. Marriage may put restrictions on how I can be with married men, but it doesn't seem to impact how I perceive them and how I experience the fit with me. I still believe I wouldn't pursue a married man... wouldn't let myself open to him knowing he was married. Both these two just snuck in..." (see In the Name of Love ). There is no doubt that in many circumstances, such loss of resources occurs. However, it is not ... Source: www.blogher.com --- 26 days ago
There's nothing like a politician admitting that he got it on with a woman who is not his (powerful) wife to provide an opportunity to explore gender roles and sexuality. Many of us thought that the Elliot Spitzer debacle was a ripe opening to talk about the suffocating Madonna/whore dichotomy that women (and men) suffer through. That was a fun and educational discussion, so let's use the John Edwards Affair to explore gender issues in faithfulness, shall we? Two posts at Feministe - John Edwards by Octogalore and The Thing About Edwards by Lauren brought up discussions about how it is not surprising that Edwards had an affair because, you know, that's what men do. Ocotogalore raised many issues, including the fact that Rielle Hunter 17 years younger than Elizabeth Edwards and reminds readers that "are still expected to dominate the decorative role." She also notes that "women may not be as likely to stray when spouses are ill." Lauren's post really had nothing to do with the nature of adultery, but much of the ensuing conversation has to do with marriage, trust, and the nature of monogamy. After one comment asserted, "Infidelity, mostly a male problem (though women can be guilty of this as well) hurts women," Renee from Womanist Musings responded (in two comments I am combining): No infidelity is not mostly a male problem. Not only do women cheat they do so in high numbers. I further believe that monogamy may not be how we were ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 6 days ago
Written by Rusty Weiss Would the MSM be laughing along with a Republican who made light of their infidelity? No, Republicans are typically chastised for any attempts at humor. Leave it to the liberal media to brush this all aside, and think - if only John Edwards and Bill Clinton had followed the same path. Original story at NewsBusters.org . It seems, these days, we can’t go an election cycle without some sort of sex scandal involving a public official gracing our newspaper headlines. We have this weird notion in America now that if a politician is caught in an affair that his career is done. We seem to be saying that what he did in his private life effects his policies or how he governs. But we all know that isn't true. We know that because almost all of our great presidents, and great leaders throughout history, have had numerous Affairs. Obviously it didn't hurt how they governed at all. I love the idea of someone saying Alexander the Great can't lead his empire because he's cheating on his wife (by the way, doesn't Alexander's bisexuality single-handedly destroy the idea that gays can't serve in the military). How about Genghis Khan? He had so many Affairs that nearly 1% of the entire world population has his genes. Not fit to lead? And there have also been men of great compassion who led noble fights while still doing ignoble things in their private lives. We are all human at home. We have now heard the stories of JFK receiving sexual favors after speeches in his limo and partying with several women on a yacht while his wife was delivering. But those are all in the past -- so they don't count. But John Edwards is caught having an Extramarital affair and the overwhelming assumption is that his political career is absolutely over. How does that make any sense? Does John Edwards care less about poor people today than he did yesterday? Would his affair lead him to change his position on NAFTA? How would it alt ...
