One of the joyful challenges I face in maintaining this blog is answering the questions of Christians who are wrestling with issues related to Reformed theology. I receive many questions from people who are new to the doctrines of grace or who are fighting through them for the first time. I try to answer as many of these questions as I can, though admittedly, a few do get away. Some time ago a reader asked about Calvinism and Evangelism. He wrote this: "Given the tenets of total depravity (the spiritually dead are unable to choose God), unconditional election (saved through God's sovereign choice) and irresistible grace (once God chooses you and regenerates you, you can't NOT embrace Him)... what does a Calvinist see as the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel? Does a gospel presentation simply provide the context in which God 'pulls the trigger' of regeneration and faith for those He has already chosen? (cf Acts 13:48.)" I understand the confusion many Christians feel when they consider Evangelism in a Calvinist context. After all, if God is entirely sovereign, and if His grace is irresistible, what possible use can God have for us ? Why would He bother using us in Evangelism? This question introduces an apparent antinomy--an appearance of contradiction between conclusions which seem equally logical, reasonable or necessary. The antinomy we face is what we perceive as tension between God's sovereignty and human responsibility. In short, ... Source: www.discerningreader.com --- 6 days ago
The Gospel and Personal Evangelism Mark Dever A Discerning Reader Editorial Review At the 2008 Founders Conference, Ed Stetzer challenged pastors and students of the Reformed persuasion to demonstrate a passion for Evangelism and warned them not to become “functional hyper-Calvinists.” Thankfully, no one in Southern Baptist leadership is promoting the heresy of Hyper-Calvinism (the belief that the gospel should not be offered freely to all). But could it be that many of us (Calvinist or non-Calvinist alike) are “functional Hyper-Calvinists?” We say we believe the gospel should be preached to all, and yet we fail to evangelize! The Gospel and Personal Evangelism (Crossway, 2007) by Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church, represents a passionate plea from one of the leading Calvinists in the Southern Baptist Convention. Dever seeks to inspire his readers to evangelize more often and more faithfully, and he hopes to promote a culture of Evangelism within our churches. In order to make his case, he focuses each chapter on answering specific questions like: Why don’t we evangelize? What is the Gospel? Who should evangelize? How should we evangelize? What isn’t Evangelism? What should we do after we evangelize? Why should we evangelize? Dever’s book is thoroughly biblical and practical. He warns against certain evangelistic strategies that sound more like sales pitches for a new product. And yet he is equally insistent that we sho ... Source: hereiblog.com --- 2 days ago

(By Jesse Johnson) If Evangelism is a lifestyle, not an event, are there certain things that pastors can do encourage people to be faithful to their calling? Basics Series Class number: bscs-101 Andrew and John were ready for Christ as John the Baptist had prepared them through his ministry, which was the inculcation of the person of JC, and they immediately followed.John understood that Jesus was the Lamb from God and he knew that if any of his flock left and went with Jesus they were in better hands. Christ’s words always get to the heart of any issues within. Heb 4:12For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.Andrew and John have not even heard Him speak yet, but they know He has the authority to teach the word of God. John the Baptist’s recommendation was all that was necessary.Jesus is ready to accept these followers, just like He does with anyone who wants to be with Him.1 Tim 2:3-4This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the... ...
